Hmm - anyone know how to tell which is which - Neil's starter is at my house if that will work, and assuming you can come to some agreement with him :)

According to eliseparts the s2 and s1 is different. Neils was a 98R, mine is a 96 p, do you happen to know if they are different? cheers Ed

Page 380 of the Service Manual PDF says the change point from the 1KW to 1.4KW starter was VIN number 685 (February 1997.)

You might be in luck with Neil's one.

And it also says there is a label on the starter that says which type it is.

Ah - will check later on today and let you know which type Neil's is, unless he happens to know his chassis number ...

I wouldn't swear to it being in A1 quality condition, however, but I suspect it'll be worth running his one until you really have to buy a new one.
