FREE CAR!! The Merc - *is now spoken for*

Post by Shug » Tue Dec 22, 2009 12:55 pm

I've decided it's time for a new shed so I want to shift on the old one. It's done me proud in the years I've owned it, but I'm now bored of it and can't be arsed getting it roadworthy again.

It's a 1990 2.0 Mercedes 190E Auto in Storm Silver (kinda gold tinge to it) Basically very sound condition - no structural rust, slight surface rust in the usual places (wheelarches only) and paint is generally good. Mechanically brilliant - needs an oil change, but the gearbox was rebuilt at about 79000 miles IIRC - I bought it at 82K. Now sitting somewhere around the 120K mile mark. Drives beautifully, only let me down once when the alternator packed in (so it's got a pretty fresh alternator - I replaced with new, not scrapper) Brake lines were replaced for last MOT, pads pretty new and newish front discs.

Bad points?

No tax or MOT. Needs 2 rear tyres for MOT, plus small hole in centre section of exhaust welded (pattern part about £120 - has cat - but the hole is in an easy place to weld) Diff is noisy, but due to a leak which I haven't got round to sorting - new gasket and fill with oil and I'd bet it'll be fine. Steering drop link has a little play - nowhere near enough for an MOT fail, but makes the steering more vague than it should be. Slight boot leak, where the optional spoiler (factory, non chav) bolts in - needs a smear of silicone.

That and you'd have to organise picking it up from Ayr - it's an auto and has no MOT or tax, so would need trailored - will start and drive fine though (if I stick some air in the back tyres)

So - if you can collect it, you can have it for nowt. It's nowhere near scrapper time for her - would rather she went to someone who will get her running and use her again. Very small cash outlay and it'll pass MOT fine (I repeat, no structural rust!) and will probably do another 100k miles without much hassle. It's a car that turned me onto old Mercs, so I'm going to size up - currently trawling the small ads for something else of a similar vintage - they really don't build them like this any more...
