Around Europe on Two Wheels (incl Stelvio)

Post by Skyenet » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:36 pm

Just thought that I would post up some pics of our recent trip around Europe. Many will have seen them on Facebook but thought I would post them up here as well. It was a great holiday and something SKye and I will always look back on with fond memories.

Looks like you both had a brilliant and very memorable trip, Iain.

Great photos, and well put together pages!

So how do you top that in 2011? :cheers

Nice pictorial report of what looks like a great trip, Iain 8) Like the map with location pics too.

Really enjoyed reading that. Brought back a lot of memories of our most recent one in 2008 where we, too, visited Lermoos/Ehrwald/Bieberwier, Garmisch, Zugspitze (stayed on the campsite by the the lift station), Timmelsjoch, Grindlewald, etc. So brought back some happy memories, thanks :thumbsup

Excellent trip by the look of it. 8)

I'd love to do some touring on the bike in Europe. I did do a week in Northern Spain (went plymouth to Santander) some years ago and the roads were superb. Also stayed at Interlaken on one of my Euro car jaunts and it was a lovely place. Is it the Eiger you can see from there? The hotel we stayed at looked straight onto it, impressive sight. How blue is the water in the lake?! It looks artificial. The mountain passes from there are also very impressive.

I love Germany, they seem to have hundreds of lovely towns/villages, great country. Makes the central belt of Scotland look industrial.

Iain, that's a great writeup and you passed through many places which are dear to our own hearts from former tours - not least the Jungfrau Region. I recognised a lot of your shots, and we really hope to get back to that area some time next year (might be the year after, mind you!).

To undertake a month-long holiday on a bike is a tremendous challenge, not unlike the 2-week Stelvio tours 2-up in an Elise except without ANY weather protection whatsoever - bravo! Stelvio pass looked idyllic as ever, my brother and sis-in-law have just driven over it in the last few days as well. It too is on the "must go back" list :-)

Iain, what a fantastic trip, thanks for sharing it.

You did a really good job of visiting places and not just driving around the route, which I'm sure makes it all the more memorable an experience.

I did a European trip with the Uni Canoe club back in 1990 3 weeks and 3500 miles in 10 countries. I always said I'd return to some of those places when I had a bit more time. Well I've been to most of the countries again, but never had much time to explore. So you need to start planning next years trip before you lose the inspiration.

Thanks for all the positive comments folks.

The journey owed a lot to Scottish Elises and the SIDC because otherwise I would probably never have found out about passes like Stelvio and would never have met Richard Gilmour, with whom we have stayed with twice in Switzerland and was an inspiration to us touring around the Alps. I love reading about other folks trips and seeing photos others have taken so only fair that I share our experience which was fantastic.

For anybody wondering how I put the trip report together, it was created on my iPad using iPhoto and Keynote (Apple's version of PowerPoint). Then transferred to my desktop version of Keynote and exported as jpegs. Just done some photography work for my friend who owns a printing business so he said he can print me off some hard copies as well.
