AMP3 video

Post by simon » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:37 am

Here's a bit of the video I took on Friday. It was the first time I'd driven the car on track so not particularly fast and I had no idea what gears I was going to be in but it still seemed to go pretty well :)
Quite a few people in there I think. I didn't upload the HD version because I couldn't be bothered waiting for a near 1gb upload to youtube!

Nice one Simon :thumbsup Good to see me for a lap or two. Really need to work on my braking points.
Looked like I was holding you up a touch but had a couple of cars spin off in front of me earlier so was keeping my distance to the cars in front through the corners. Honest :?

Good camera mounting point, showing forward, peripheral and driver activity views - neat.

The smoothness is worth noting. A lot of us might now take this for granted, but for those newer to trackday driving (my Uncle Danny was one!), it doesn't necessarily come intuitively but can make such a huge difference. Malcolm J showed Danny that in the closing stages of Friday in fact :-)

I should have said, I was using a GoPro HD camera with a suction mount that I got for my birthday from http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk
The mount worked really well, I tried it outside the car on the drivers door but bottled it after a lap in case it fell off. I think it'd be fine (seeing as it's much lighter than the SLR setup that Peter had on the R8!) but I'd still like to tether it to the car somehow in case it popped off, wouldn't want it to tear a hole in a front clam or lose the camera!

Interesting set of products there Simon. Which one do you actually have?

I have a "regular" DV camcorder of 2003 vintage, Sony handicam stylee, running "legacy" (!) mini-DV tapes...would your mount hold such an item or do I need something more heavy duty?

I had never bothered about video before but I'm getting sentimental in my old age and it would be nice to have some record of UJI's exploits...and also to review my own style etc!

Meant to ask for a loan of a suction mount before the AMP3 day but decided fiddling with a camcorder was the last distraction I needed, on a 2-hour session which was focused on getting Danny out in the car for the first time...

The mount I have is 5th from the bottom on this page http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/gopro-hd-camera.html
I wouldn't use it on anything too weighty, it's designed for light cameras but you do get bigger and sturdier ones and I've used one that Gareth had (think it actually belonged to Uldis) for an old school tape camera too. I've actually got an old bullet cam and some suction mounts that I've been meaning to flog for ages, would work well if your camera has a video input socket...... ;)

I also had a Gopro in the engine bay on a suction mount. It didn't move despite the heat in there. Videos are on the Amp3 thread.

Never one to miss an opportunity eh! Not sure what inputs my cam has, I will however have a look...would that be a "DV IN" type socket? I know for sure it doesn't have one of those.

Bullet cam presumably has applications for things like biking (helmet or h-bar mount?) which could prove fun with the kids etc I guess.

It's analogue so should just be AV IN.
I really can't recommend the GoPro highly enough. Mine was a Christmas present last year and Lorraine was convinced it would be a waste of time but I've used it loads, everywhere from the pool on holiday for taking shots of Ethan swimming to skiing, cliff jumping, mountain biking and on the car and there's just no way I could have gotten some of the footage or photos I have with any other camera. There's so many ways you can use the different mounts, for example:
