sounds great.

i started looking at elises last year but exige is much more my thing TBH.
wanted one since 2000 and i can till remember the date i first saw one on the road.(geek)
the dc2 is great and theres a great community of owners on itr-dc2.com but they are getting way to common about my way,at least 8 people i know have one.when i got mine there wa only 2 other tegs i knew of local.
idealy i would like an s1 but sometimes i find them daunting, engine rebuilds and the like.
but i'm a racer at heart and want something that knocks my socks off everytime i'm in it.

Cool - some really like the racecar for the road styling of the S1 Exige (me included)... I couldn't be without the wind in my hair at 140tuts though... Maybe that's where my hair is going!!!

Bear in mind the only (S1) mechanical differences are the grenade tuned engine, bigger rims, different stock dampers and more weight ;-)

I have the grenade tuned engine bit....

 I'm sure it's as solid as the last one  I reckon with that torque the old PG1 will munch itself before the engine goes boom.

Where is the CR box then?

cheers kenny...get yours all sorted then
i was talking to andy at hyndland honda the other day and he said you stayed near by.surprised i've not seen you about as i stay near and drive that way everyday.

shug....grenade tuned...are you refering to the s1 engine(noob)
i called bell and colville the other day to enquire about the s1 exige they had but the guy was pretty unhelpful.
i asked if the exige had had its engine rebuild as i've read that they generally require a "re-freshen"about 25k and this one had near 40k on it.
he said no and the way he said it suggested the car was a disaster waiting to happen so i questioned him a bit more with all the research etc i've done and the guy couldn't wait to get me off the phone

K series isn't the most robust in the world but can be reasonable. Head Gasket failures are moderatly routine, but not normally terminal from what I have seen (Touch wood) The best thing is due to it's modular nature it is cheap and simple to get hold of an old engine and rob bits from it. Not sure about VHPDs though, much of their internals are high spec.

The tuned engines are by there very nature more likely to suffer due to the higher stresses upon them. VHPD engines are tuned versions of the K putting out 160 or 190 bhp. VHPDs need regular care and servicing every 3k miles IIRC (Could be 6k)

Grenade references are reserved for Shug's previous engine (IIRC Piston lands, piston rings, valve stems, valve guides and stem oil seals?) and unfortunatly AndyG's Yota lump! (TBC bottom end terminal gribblyness)

I don't think head gasket problems are as widespread as people make out.
Interestingly, I read somewhere (Autocar maybe) that Lotus are to be doing some work on the K for Nanjing/MG with a view to making is US compliant.

S1 Exige had the VHPD version of the K series - basically a highly tuned track spec engine - most major components replaced (down to the crank) It's not got the best reputation for reliability, and needs regular rebuilds... (Note, the 160 isn't a VHPD - the only versions of the VHPD sold had 177bhp and 190bhp - the 190 was a conversion to track spec and wasn't type approved for the road, although you can get them through MOTs)

S2 Exige has the same Toyota engine as the 111R. So not as highly strung (but still chucks out 190ish bhp) Shame that the S2 has some lard over the S1 (up to 150kg dependant on spec and who you believe ;))

Autocar.... or as I call it bullsh*t monthly....

Maybe they are, but it'd take a helluva lot of work and would probably involve strangling the engine even more :( Can't see it being any benefit to us - unless someone wants a 90hp 1.8 that puffs vaporised evian out the exhaust...

cheers shug...you just saved me posting up a message asking about the vhpd engines!!
i still need to research a bit more though.
how much roughly does it cost to re-fresh the engines?
could always stick a k20 or even and f20 in it!!!
