New car thats not a Lotus...

Post by jj » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:43 pm

Strange but true

After 5 Lotus in the last few years it was time for a change. I loved the grey car but ever since it got put back together it started to be obvious that whilst it was a mega car to drive and look it, it couldnt have been less useful as an only car for the type of driving I do.

I started to think about what I wanted and the criteria - fast, comfy, safe, auto, easy for my GF to drive, warrantied, good looking, and ended up with this.

Drove the 335d and the 335i back to back, and whilst the diesel was awesome I went petrol as just couldnt bring myself to own a diesel.

The petrol makes a nice noise and when I fit the JB3 tuning box I have it will be a nice 390bhp/550nm.

Although, to be honest I might hold off for a while as its more than fast enough as it is at the moment as those who have been out in it will probably agree

Loving having toys, Idrive, bluetooth, heated stuff and electric everything - nice change. Car is a 15k miler, absolutely mint and the guy I bought it off was a nice old guy who had just bought an S5, so ideal previous owner :D

It is a lot more grown up I agree

Nice place to sit, and easy to cover distance quickly and in comfort.

Took a mate out who has an E46 M3 and even he was like "holy moly this thing shifts!"

Probably not Paul - but the LSD is meant to make a huge difference on both 35d + 35i.

Plan was a great allround car out the box, not something to mod the sh!t out of until it breaks a lot as been there before

...but more powwaaah is so easy and cheap  well over 400hp is pretty easy.

Nice 8)

Top tip: I assume the car is on runflats. Ditch them for Falken 452s as I have recently done on my E91 and the steering, ride and handling will be massively improved. It is the best single change you can make to any E9X Beemer. Lots of discussion here http://www.bmwland.co.uk/talker/ about this. Enjoy :thumbsup

Runflats will indeed be getting pied once they are needing replaced.
They are probably my only gripe with the car at the moment, hitting small ridges in the road / catseyes is almost painful they feel that hard.

Looks nice, I'm hoping that a 335d Touring will replace the current 330d in a couple of years.

How do you find the gearbox? I'm quite happy not to have a clutch pedal but I'd prefer an automated manual rather than a torque converter auto so thats the only thing putting me off.
Whats the throttle response like and how do you find the push-pull paddles?
Had a play with the paddles on one in the showroom and they seem less driver friendly than the 'pull left for down, right for up' set up in my brothers SMG M3.

The gearbox has 3 "modes" - D, DS and Manual.

D is pretty leisurely, less changing down of gears and slower throttle response. In DS, its still a full auto but throttle response is mega sharp and it changes down gear instantly then boosts. I have not played about with the M much but got used to the paddles pretty quickly, and it does the nice auto-blipping on the downchanges which sounds 8)

In DS on the motorway, 50-100 tuts and beyond is amusing stuff  My mate who I took out who has the SMG M3 was mostly impressed by how much the autobox game had moved on, and his is a late 05 car.
