911

Post by kerryxeg » Tue May 24, 2011 11:40 am

Went for a wee run when the world was glued to their TV for a wedding.

It just doesn't get any better than this! 30 miles of the same, no cars, no sheep, and a visit to the pie shop at the end of it.

Very nice, that a couple of us S.Elise'rs who now have classic 911's :D

Love the colour - I know people like the Guards Red of the era but I think the blue/silver suits the car :thumbsup

Have you got a 3.2 Carrera or is it the "widow maker" Turbo?

I properly love that. Don't care how quick it is or how it handles, I just love it.

I must have given Tut the details in the past - if not I'm impressed with the Porker Geekery. The only difference is the missing turbo and the badge. Suspension, brakes, bodywork, interior were all turbo spec.

I'm not one to get too sentimental about cars (this might be the exception though), it's all to easy to fall into the too good to drive trap. This one has a bit of history, so for those interested...........it was the original import of this model, registered by Porsche UK as A911 and used as a press car. Featured in an Autocar article (July - I think) 1987, the car came with a copy of the autocar mag although I've changed the reg after. I also have the initial invoice, which was a staggering £53k -in 1987 for goodness sake!

I bought it because it matched the one I had on a poster when I was at uni - I've always promised myself one since then. I've probably had it 5 or 6 years, during which it's had the interior fully redone, the exterior fully redone, new suspension and brakes, new fuel tank, and finally a full engine and gearbox rebuild at Ninemeister Warrington. It's not so bad when you do a bit every year. The engine was rebuilt totally standard, but Ninemeister are about the best. Everything gets cleaned measured, then reground rebalanced or replaced as required. The rebuild took 2 months, but the result is incredible. It makes more power than it would have had at new spec, averaged 27mpg over 850miles a couple of weekends ago and once you hit 3000rpm things really happen. The extra width gives a lot of grip, you need to keep the fuel tank half full (in the front) to get reasonable steering response, and the brakes are easy to lock, but it's good fun and a little bit of a challenge.

Anyway - did no-one spot the nice hill in the background and the sympathetic lines of the mountain following those of the 911.

The hill was the first thing Lisa spotted, Kerry :-)

Shall we have a competition with everyone else to see if they know what it is?!

Car is utterly lubberly, well done you. This is the shape of 911 that I would one day love to have but I'm banishing that thought for now, since I have my own, erm Elise restoration project, already underway it seems!

Oh and the colour is certainly spot on. Very unusual and extremely classy.

The last time I was over 20 years ago, despite being past the road end twice a year for the past 6 or 7 years. I could vaguely remember the terrain and had always wondered how exige compatible it would be. Well the answer is not very, an elise would probably be ok, but it would be a very stop start run, and quite a few possible groundings.

There are a few hills around the area that look a bit similar, but if you've seen this one before it's quite unmistakable.

It also has that cool trick where it can look extremely different depending on the angle you view it from.

I think Peter is on the money, btw.

We were along that road on our Easter hols, in the Skoda natch, and it was a lovely run but I wouldn't really fancy the Elise on it other than for true sight-seeing. Having no roof affords some cracking views of the mountains towering over either side :-)

Maybe I'll put it on the Achmelvich itinery then...

Have never climbed it but had a good view of it south of Suilven. Not very high but very dramatic looking. SP?

Aye.

Have you climbed Suilven, out of interest?

Your R8 might look quite good photographed with that behind, following on from Kerry's theme!
