Good lord this was posted two years ago. Hard to believe that it is thirty years since I left.

Dirka, there is no way that I would have swapped your war for ours, at least we had a great time in between and could often see who we were fighting.

Keep your head down......

Just mentioned this on the other thread as a ps, but can only find one photo. Will see if I can get any others from old friends as there must have been hundreds taken during the races.

"When I had the Motocross track built, we had a much bigger track built around the outside that included the sand dunes. We used to organise an annual race around it that any one could enter, Military, Civilians, local Omanis, construction companies etc, but it had to be with Landrover type and bigger trucks that could be modded to any spec that you could dream up. Used to be called the Salalah Off Road Race.

SOAF ran an old red Dennis fire engine that we had T/C with the help of a local engineering company, and some of the construction companies, especially the German ones put some fantastic modified machines in. The Omanis also thought it great fun and put their own entries in. None of this was taken seriously, but the Sultan thought that it was a good idea as did the local Sheiks, so money was no problem.

We obviously wanted to win and had extra equipment, so as well as the driver there were four of us hanging off the sides and back throwing smoke grenades and tear gas at anybody who tried to ovetake us. Afterwards there was a huge fuddle with spit roasted cows and goats and all the other Oman goodies, as well as a bar Marquee, as alcohol was no problem on Military ground.

We ran three of these then we had to cancel them, as someone fell off the truck in front of us and our driver ran over him. Think he was French though.

After I left in '77 it was restarted, but just for 4 x wheelers and in an organised manner which did not include trying to disable your opponents.

Thats what I was trying to think of Phil, bodged up vehicles with guns sticking out of everywhere.

We did have GPMG's and Rocket launchers mounted on the fire engine, and we had AK 47's as well, but we only fired blanks.

Still makes people duck though when it is pointing at them and goes bang.
