Good work Ross. Have you had a bit of experience with an SLR before? The reason I ask, other than the excellent composition in your shots, is that I was looking at the EXIF data on some of the pics and I see that the white balance was set to manual and indeed has been altered in a few.
I am no expert in photography and have yet to try using anything other than auto white balance.

You have managed to get excellent motion blur in most of the pics by using a slow shutter speed. Unfortunately, I think this has also resulted in some of the cars also being blurry.

At track days, I tend to set the camera to shutter speed priorty and keep it above about 1/250th. I also try to review the results on th LCD to see if they are sharp. I normally use a 70-300mm zoom so you may get away with a slower speed with a "shorter" lens. You may have struggled to get speeds of 1/250th or faster on Sunday due to the poor light for much of the morning. To counter act this you can up the ISO a wee bit to say 400.

Apologies if you already know this, as I said I am no expert.

Regards

Stewart,

this is the kind of chat I am looking for, if you like someone that is not an expert explaining the kind of best setting for different environments! Good call, definately going to push the whole SLR's for beginners thing come early next year!

If you think the white Exige looks good you should go for a drive in a Exige Cup. Robbie very kindly took me out as a pax on Saturday and the power was so smooth. :thumbsup Be warned if you do go for a drive you will be so desperate to buy one as it is an amazing car :drive

Thanks Stewart! I am an SLR virgin, I used to have Sony V1 which had all manual control apart from the focus (and the auto was very slow).
I just set the white balance to one of the presets I think it was cloudy so nothing clever going on on my part there! :) (re: composition I forgot I get paid to work with cameras although virtual and for moving cutscenes! Got all that rules of third stuff drilled into my head etc..)

I think I was using about 1/100th I really wanted to practice panning and get some good motion blurring shots. Unfortunately about half of them came out with the cars slightly blurry. I think it works ok with the first pic but the others its just a distraction.

I was using a tamron 70 - 300mm lens - I hear the rule of thumb is to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/focal length to avoid camera shake - but I guess that doesn't apply for panning(?)

Poah pointed out on Pistonheads that I should have been using AI focus. I was only using one shot most of the time so if I was taking multiple shots the car was out of focus usually after the first one. He also mentioned about setting the camera to custom function 4 so it only meters when you take a shot.

Unfortunately some of the pics that looked great on the wee LCD screen looked a bit gash as soon as they were on my PC!

Cheers for the tips and agree with Dave this type of advice is very helpful! :thumbsup
