Just off the phone with Dan all was good until he floored it and it would not go onto V-tec
He says its either the speed sensor or something else. He is trying to trace the problem. Got a 1330 call to find out if he has found the issue if not I loose more cash and my last chance to shake down Tango before Silverstone.
The highs and lows are killing me
After missing the weekend was really looking forward to this evening - fingercrossed but not holding my breath!
Should also say that Dan has been great just Suppliers and bad luck teaming up!

Back from Brands!
Firstly have a to say a massive thanks to Paul Golding and his team for an awesome weekend at the DTM and getting everything organised in time – hats off to you! :tu
Thursday afternoon, packed up the RLC on my way back from Glasgow and then headed for the office, after a jump start – no rough love for 10 days hadn’t gone down to well
Looked out of my office to see the heavens open and ran down to sort that.
Heading down to my folks in the borders for dinner on route and enjoyed some friendly scalping down the A68. So much more entertaining than the E class. South of Earlston, leaving 9.30-ish, the fog and mist came in and made the rest of the journey to the A1 a pain, but helped by a GPS system that shows how straight the roads are good progress was still made.
That GPs system packed up 110 miles north of London, and I had to revert to a map as the RLC doesn’t have a working cigarette lighter.
2.35am arrive at Brands and 410 miles later, haven’t booked accommodation and everywhere is shut. F***. It’s pissing down, and I decide to find my way to the entrance so I know where to go the next morning. As I pull up to the gate it opens, and the RLC is beckoned in. I head for the paddock, but I’m not allowed to take the car in so park up, put on the shower cape over the soft top and make an Elise tent! Putting my race suit under my ass, and my big sheep jumper under my head, my exhaustion allows me to sleep for 2.5 hours!
Awoke just after 5.40 and text McKean to check he’s made his flight and call Robin to see how his progress south in the bus is going. Get up to discover a 340r being unloaded behind me. Start the car and head for the paddock. German DTM dude waves me through and I’m parked up in the LOTRDC paddock marquee! (another well done to Paul for that one as it was still peeing down) Highly impressed with this as its only 6.05 and already some of the LOTRDC have surfaced!
We sign on, McKean, Robin and Nicola arrive in the bus, and scrutineering begins. Another clean bill of health for the RLC
Having a relaxing morning until we are told to get suited and booted and good to go! Qual has been brought forward from 12.45 to 10.45-ish………nuts. Oh, and have I mentioned I haven’t driven the circuit before, not even on TOCA!
Out we head – aware of the difference in surroundings. The women are far hotter and numerous and the cars around us are much more impressive. Huge Audi and Mercedes hospitality stands are just down the paddock, as are the Formula Palmer Audi chaps and the World Side Cars boys – who are insane.
Head out on to track – nervous and not knowing what to expect. Here we go!
Its not easy having your first few laps surrounded by guys who’ve already had a weekend racing here and know the place (round 1 was at Brands) and instantly I’m watching my mirrors almost as much as what’s coming up next. I look for some of my class A chums and try to follow round the circuit.
2 laps pass and I think I’m starting to get there although my lines are horrible still. Realise that I actually need to start trying to qualify so put my foot down. Poor Golding is being held up by me at some points, and I’m in turn trying to get some clearer track in front. See Hans in the distance and try to watch him. Walshy rips by, and I try hard to keep up…that lasted 3 corners…McKean comes by and I stay in reach (distant) for a bit longer. Must have worked okay , but on the run down from Druids to Graham Hill I try to brake deeper, lock up and spin…..didn’t feel right (i.e. had no chance to catch it) and it turns out I’ve hit someone’s coolant. The world goes in to slow motion as I spin 180 and see Hands heading for me, letting the car go backwards off the circuit down Cooper straight…….whoops. Thought I was on for my best lap before that
Ah well, back in the pits I discover I’m 7th in class and about 1.2 seconds off the pace.
Golding tells me he’d have out qualified me had I not hindered his progress at the start
The rest of the day sees us having to do some repairs to RLC, and McKean appears with some beer. ¾ of a pint later our sleepless Ape is pissed! Hilarious! We have a few more for good measure, and we head back to Robins in-laws just after 6-ish, shattered.

Some dinner and chat and we are all tucked up by 10.30 pm. 6 hours sleep in the previous 48 caused me to doze of standing up, and this time it wasn’t drink related.
I wake up at 9.15am feeling SO much better for having a bed and some sleep! Off to the circuit we go. DTM’s are on track when we arrive practising, and they sound epic. Watching them dive down through Paddock (turn 1) is an awesome sight, the Audi’s sounding like mini F1 cars, the Merc’s like……well Mercs. My E240 is nearly as loud !!
Golding surpasses himself with the arrival the LOTRDC pit girl for the day. She looks hot, but Paul’s next trick is far more impressive. 30 or so pit babes arrive! (Where were they at Oulton Paul???
) and suddenly the cars aren’t getting much TLC. Camera’s are out and rightly so – pics to be added! Get 3 to pose with the RLC for a pic, and Paul Harding suggests I join them for the picture (owe you one mate
).

More bizarre things happen…McApe washes his car…under protest…and his car begins to look yellow….ish…that colour that banana’s start to go when they ripen a bit too much

RLC gets a Sony sticker – I get some lunch and we sit watching DTM practise. Awesome facility if you haven’t been.
We’ve had a briefing, and we start to get suited and booted. Its now getting seriously warm and way hotter than Friday.
We get moved out in to formation, and sit in the sun roasting for 10 minutes.
We are called – oh crap, nerves are back!
As we line up on the grid, for the parade lap I’m really hot. Boards come out, engines start to pile on revs, light the tyres as the green flag waves, and we are of on the formation lap. Learning the track still and trying to work out where I’m heading off the start.
Back round to the grid. Very nervy. Select first and crawl to the line. Lights go red. Lights go out, drop the clutch at about 4.7k rpm and go. Have a good start, but then see a massive cloud and smash off to my left…sh*t. Keep going though in to Paddock on the inside and charge up Hailwood Hill, to the inside of Druids. Fly down the hill to Graham Hill bend, and the RlC is shifting, pass Hans on the approach and set of up Cooper, through Surtees start to outtake on the inside, for outside at Mclaren and catch sight of a yellow flag and the SC sign (Safety car!). Balls….. drop back from alongside the cars I thought I was about to pass (now it makes sense, whoops) and we then have 8-9 laps under the safety car.
First lap I look to see who’s been involved. Skeggsy and Steve W, and both cars don’t look in good shape! Hope the chaps are ok. Next lap the ambulance is there, still no sign of the drivers. Another 6 laps go by and I’m wondering if it will restart. Wonder if I skipped by Hans easily because of the yellow or not, but have no idea.
Lose my train of thought coming round clark and let James get about 100 yds ahead of me as I notice the SC boards are now in, and we are heading for the green at the start line….FFS…utter muppet…and a few other bits of abuse are hurled at myself by myself!
Charging down for Paddock have Hans on my tail and we dive through and try to reel in James who qualified 1st for Cat A. Hans has got me through the bends, and I’m getting more and more sideways. He finally pips me through Mclaren and my resulting slide puts me wide and on to the marbles – time to chase him and try to learn more about lines!
Follow Hans for about a lap, some through Paddock to find an Exige in the gravel, and then the red flag appears! Bollocks! Race over!
Head back to the pits, wondering more about the safety of Skeggsy and Steve. Both are fine, or as fine as you can be given whats just happened.
I’m 6th, so one place up on my starting position, and with the amount of time the SC car was out, am cursing the lack of racing. Hans and I had a good laugh , but I just couldn’t get the car to stay with him through the bends and we only managed 4 laps of it .
Paul Harding has won CAT A with 9th place overall and an awesome effort. He was so far in front I actually thought I was 5th initially! Well done mate.
McKean finishes 4th overall and 1st in class.

More beers follow, then Mckeans champagne from the prize giving is left with me! Take it to race control with us to look for Graham Walsh’s wing mirror.
Race control is an awesome set-up!

DTM people everywhere. Pic below shows the DTM qual times with Mika on Pole and ours with Walshy on Pole – thought it was quite funny at the time.

We head off shortly after, and head back to Robins. Start to wonder where the SE crew will be and will they have reached TT yet?
McKean and I have a chat about tactics and the circuit while chilling out in the pool, aiding by some Stella – this racing lark isn’t all work

Dinner and a few more drinks and its bed time.
Wake early really hot, and mind fills with racing thoughts – get some juice and my laptop and work from 5.30 till 7-ish and then fall asleep again.
We’re on the road by 11 and back at Brands for midday, straight in to a meeting with the Clark of the course about Saturday’s incidents. Can only compare it to be dressed down at school, and he’s more disappointed in us than anything. (which you can understand given the stature of the race weekend)
Shame really as he’s a great chap and very keen to help when Hans and I quiz him about what do to if you over take under yellow accidentally.
Its way busier today with about 50000 people expected. And hotter. Got new tyres to try and combat the sideways action of Saturday and take some advice for Adams and Page about pressures given the heat. Here’s hoping it works, my tyres were melting badly on Saturday and off very quickly.
Float about, watch the DTM procession – sorry race, and then its time to get suited and booted. Nerves are off again and its really warm.

Line up and have a chat – we’re delayed.
Called and we are off. Today’s start see’s myself, Thorney and Golding separated in our qualifying time by 1/1000th of a second. Unfortunately they are starting ahead of me
Needless to say Goldings delighted
We go out and I’m in a grid position near the pitside, with Paul inside left, BJ Alongside and Hans in front. This is going to be fun………….light on , then off………
Much better start, 4.5k, and I catch Golding immediately, and follow Hans down to Paddock. Everyone diving for the apex means the outside of the track in quicker, and Golding retakes me, and I dive in behind him through Paddock. Look up the inside on the run up Hailwood to Druids and notice Golding taking a far deeper braking manoeuvre round the outside – and inspired bit of overtaking I reckon and follow him…..
Unfortunately for Paul, after doing half of Druids at an angle that would make the drifting demo guys bow in admiration, he loses it on the exit, but always the gentleman, slides across the track away from me, allowing me to get off the brakes and nail it after Thorney in to Graham Hill bend.
We have a great scrap through the next 3 to 4 laps and I finally get by him on the approach to Surtees. Closing on the group C car of Doug now, and although I’m quicker through the corners his extra 150bhp tells dividends on each and every straight. Balls. And I’m fighting of an eager Thorney who is out in the class A VX220 to claim as many Loti scalps as he can!
I can’t get by Doug and as we come through Mclaren I try to group the inside of Doug and Thorney heads for the outside. Doug nails it as we hit the straight leaving me wondering where Thorney is and wishing I had some nitrous to keep up with the S/C.
Worried now on the sprint to Paddock that Thorney is in my blind spot. Can’t see him in the mirrors so glance over my shoulder as I hit the brakes and there’s no sign of him.
Skaggs comes by in Malcolm’s S/C Exile and i chase him, hoping he might lead me past Doug. ½ a lap later the Safety car board is back out. Blast.
Come round Clark to find Thorneys outside line had ended in the gravel trap! Awesome fun until then mate
Passed a spinning Gav at some point during that to and as we slow for the soon to be Safety Car fiasco notice Gav’s Exile starting to loom large in my mirrors. No idea where I am position wise in class.

Notice Paul Harding off in the tyre wall on Cooper.
After several Safety Car laps and them making a balls of it, we restart. All of a sudden I’m chasing Skaggs, fighting off Gav and then having to get by people we are lapping due to the safety car getting a bit confused!
Gav makes a fair few moves, but i resist them, somehow, and we have some really close racing - top effort mate!
Skaggs gets by Doug, but I don’t have the pace to follow. Pushing really hard now and am aware my tyres are starting to go off. My increasingly sliding car is actually probably helping me take up more of the track than intended, and Clark curve is now becoming a bit of a drift.
Doug gets Hans on the straight and I’m delighted to think that the battle of Saturday can recommence! Closing round the next lap start to think that Hans must be struggling with tyres, and as we come down Brabham straight on the next lap I’m thinking about where to pass….until I see the chequered flag! Bollocks!
Wave to the crowds on the cool down lap and reflect on an awesome race – and I’ve got it on film
Get back to the pits thinking I’m 4th, Robin thinks I’m 5th. Oh well better than Saturday. Then Hans comes up to congratulate me on coming 3rd? I refuse to believe it till I see the results. Gav comes over to chat about our scrap and confirm I’m third and then the results come through. It’s confirmed.
F****** delighted doesn’t come close!

Wonder about with a huge grin and then go to chat to McKean who’s won class B again The TSE trophy collection continues to grow!
We have the prize giving, still in racing suits after all the chat, despite the heat, and I’m called up first. Grinning like a Cheshire cat! Photos taken and then Jez throws champagne over us from above!

Time to get tidied, grab a shower and then head up to Kelvin’s to drop off the cars, as we’re at Silverstone next weekend. We McKean it up the road, and finally I get back home at 2.30 am.
What a weekend!

Was gutted to miss TT07, and wondered during the weekend a few times if I’d done the right thing, but at least I brought home a Trophy this time
Another new track to learn in qualifying next weekend, although hopefully this time there will be a new Tango R driver joining the TSE squad
