German GP advise needed

Looking to head to German Gp -July 22 and struggling to find best airport to fly too and best/ nearest town/ village to stay.

Is car hire reccomended - was hoping to avoid as will be plenty of beer consumption planned but looks as though all airports and bigger cities are a fair distance from the Nurburgring.

Any travel tips appreciated . Cheers Keith

German Wings, budget German airline fly from Edinburgh to Cologne-Bonn (CGN) airport. It's an ex airforce base in between Koln and Bonn.

£46 to fly out on the Friday or Saturday. £54 to fly back on the Monday.

did this 2 years back...flew to Frankfurt ex Edinburgh...dirt cheap....and managed to hire a CLK for the cost of a Focus via carhire2000.com, also blagged the meridian (in Frankfurt) via Expedia for £45 a night!

The drive on the Autobahn was unmissable - about an hour from Hockenheim - much cheaper and more enjoyable than Silverstone!

Leaving for Frankfurt tomorrow night - flight 1p, 24.99 coming back (tax more than doubles it to £52 - still cheap tho).
Well deserved break from work and great opportunity to rack up my carbon footprint a bit - need to do something to make sure we get a better summer next year
