After sitting on my small digital camera and cracking the LCD screen. I have been quoted £200 to get it repaired.

I have been looking at SLR's

I noticed this offer.

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/600394

+ OLYMPUS 40-150MM LENS for £429.

Can some of you guy's tell me anything about this camera and how good a deal it is?

I have the Olympus E500, and am very happy with it. I find it's alot more intuative to use than the Nikons, not so many menu levels.

Here's a review of the E400
http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_olympus_e400.php
That's a good price currys are doing. Just remember that the focal length for the Olymus is doubled - So a 40-150mm lens is the same as an 80-300mm on a 35mm film camera.

The best thing to do is go in to the shop, and pick it up. Some cameras just feel right, and some don't.
No, No! not Bloke. It's pronounced Black, as in Plaque

Scotty

I don't know anything about that camera but I am sure it is more than capable. Unless you have a fair bit of experience, the chances are that the DSLR will be capable of much more than your skills will allow.

Personally I bought a Nikon. It was either a choice between that or a Canon. I believe that the pair of them probably have the widest range of lenses available both OEM and third party manufacturers.

The only other thing I would add is, if you can, try and get a hold of the camera (literally) in your hands in a shop. That I why I chose the Nikon because at the time it felt better in my hands than the Canon.
I have a D70 and as I said above it can do much more than I am capable of. A bit like me buying a Ferrari - I would enjoy driving it, but I could never fully utilise it's power and handling.

You may want to have a swatch at the Pistonheads photography forum -only thing I would add is do a wee bit of searching in the forum first before going straight in with a "Which DSLR" thread. There are least 2-3 of these a week at the moment :)

Scotty,

If you can source something you want in the States, I'll pick it up and take it over for you. I'll be back in Aye-berdeen on the 12th of June.

I can swing in with it after then, then go for a blast!

Cheers
Robbie

Another vote for go down the store and have a play with a couple of cameras

Also do you want a point and shoot or you plan to get into the silly lense worlds of SLRs.

if wanting a point and shoot then don't bother with the extra expense of an SLR. If you want to get changeable lenses then go for either a nikon or canon and then you can borrow lenses to try out from folk here.

Another factor is you can't get much in a 340r so you need something small but not small enough to fit in your pocket

The man speaks sense (surprisingly  )
SLRs are a pain in the arse when you just want to take a quick snap. I've got a Canon IXUS as well as my 300D and it's a great little camera.

The man speaks sense (surprisingly Shocked ) :withstupid

The Canon Ixus range is brilliant, and one in everyones price bracket, and so simple to use!

I took this on it Image and that was the Ixus 40 - sadly, i took it out to a party, got very drunk, put it in my back pocket and broke the screen too! Not worth fixing in my opinion, go get yourself a new one!

I think I need to get myself another camera, as taking pictures with no LCD is a bit of pot luck.

I am going off the idea (for now) of getting a SLR and am going to get one of thse.

My last camera was a Lumix and it was good.

Anyone got one of these?

I love my SLR both in car form and camera form :D
Scotty, just get one of those out the back of a truck camera that you got me ;)

Pictures are so much better but if you just want snap shots (close up) then a wee LCD camera would be fine.

Another vote for a visit to the shop.

Apart from handling the cameras, insist on taking a few shots to determine the speed at which they will shoot. You might have to get the assistant to put a card in. If they won't do that then go elsewhere. The most common complaint people have with compacts is that the delay after pressing the button is too long.

IIRC Jessops have their price matching back on, you'll definitely get a proper demo there and with 30 days refund (better check they still do that), you can't go wrong. I once took a Minolta A1 back on day 29, got an immediate refund and bought the A2 which had just come out.
