Seems to be more and more noise about banks and credit card companies having to introduce account fees, to offset the money they won't be making from charges any more.

As I've never had a bank or credit card charge in my life, I wouldn't be happy about having to pay for these services.

As far as I'm concerned, if people are spending money they're not entitled to spend, then they bally well should be charged.

Rather than refunding charges, I'd be doubling them, and would tell any complainants to kindly fcuk off.

doesn't change the fact that they are illegal in the first place!

Most of my charges were the results of direct debits that came off my account after fcuk up in my old job not paying me on time and being a skint student!

I don't think most people were laughing it up drinking champagne, snorting coke off of strippers tits thinking "don't worry about it they'll be deemed illegal in 5 years time and we can claim it all back!"

That's not what it's about. Sure, if you spend some money you "borrow" on an overdraft you should be prepared to pay a fairly high rate of interest on it, and I would think a few quid to cover the admin of writing you a letter (in case you didn't know you had gone overdrawn) would be reasonable.

What even you might be annoyed by would be a direct debit bouncing (due to some cock up), but you're still in credit to the tune of 29 quid. Then they write you a letter (to tell you the DD bounced), charge you 30 quid. Now you're 1 pound overdrawn. So they write you a letter telling you that you are overdrawn, and charge you 30 quid. That's pretty unfair.

Also for people who are genuinely struggling to exist at the edge of their overdraft limit, the constant 30 quid charges often make sure they can never escape their overdraft.

So had the banks not been so cynical in their application of charges, I think this whole thing would never have become an issue. Instead, they're now being forced to back track into a different business model which will cost us all, but is ultimately a fairer approach.

Cheers,
Robin
