It has always amazed me that Lotus got away with releasing the S1 Exige with an engine that seems to have been a bit of a work in progress. Pretty bizarre when you think about it - a car that cost well over 30k new which doesn't seem to run quite right unless you fit a new ECU and other assorted bits

Similar argument I levied at the S2 Exige and its ECU and the reflash - and I guess with the number of faults of any production Lotus, its the way small manufacturers work.
edit: obviously the yota is far better worked out than the VHPD K but you know what I mean

The 177 was emissions (sort of) friendly. The 190 was sold as Track Only.

Does that mean all the 190 cars were "upgraded" at the dealer if they were track only or were they like that from the factory?

I think you could request it with the track option from new - in which case the factory could bolt the bits on. Otherwise, it was a dealer-fit.
So both

The original VHPD engine was developed for the S1 Sport 190, supposedly for track only, but I believe most cars were converted and DVA'd for road use. This put out the genuine 192hp from the start, unlike the 177hp version that later appeared in the Exige.
Now hard to get hold of, and sells at a premium.

"Developed for the dedicated track fan and for fully-fledged motorsport applications, the Elise Sport 190 is pure racer. At its heart is an extensively modified (each engine is meticulously hand-built by race technicians) version of the standard 1.8-litre engine, kicking out a breathtaking 190PS (140kW).
This mighty powerplant is known, appropriately, as the VHPD, or Very High Performance Derivative, and can hurl the featherweight Sport 190 from standstill to 60mph in 4.3secs (0-100km/h in 4.4secs) and to 100mph in a supercar-slaying 10.72secs."

Just back from a short dusk blast - man I love this car
It is making a bit of a rasp thanks to the blowing flexi (not too keen driving it in case it heats up the toelink / driveshaft?) but its still so much more involving to drive than any of my previous cars. Feels pretty quick too.
Looking forward to getting it tweaked in the next few days and the pagids on and a fluid change (brake and oil) before KH on Tuesday.

Want one.
Cheers again for the new flexi; got it fitted this afternoon and the old one was literally cracked and crumbling. Sounds much better now also
