I know its not brilliant but when compared to what I have just now its a big improvement...
Thats also for the original style, not the facelift which has different front bumper supports and revised "friendly" interior so I dont know it that figure still applies. But I do take your point.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Wrong - the BMW mill is a 6 cyl, yours is a 5 (hence the Td5

) which I think is LR's own creation

Well they shoul dhave used the 6 Cyl engine, might have given it a bit more poke!

Didn't know the Disco had any...
BTW Dave - my sis-in-law has an 01 TD5 with a chip & manual box, pulls quite nicely (the Disco that is

)
Good point Tony ref the NCAP - I now remember Top Gear mentioning it - food for thought John - the original was only 2 stars IIRC - a few tweaks aint gunna make for a huge difference...

I remember that TG show... it's not until they showed you the aftermath of the Freelander that you saw just how poor 2 stars actually is.
Saying that, back in 2001 I had a 3dr K-series Y-reg Freelander for about 18mths and it did the family thing/skip run admirably. It was really bad for misting up mind you... but did the job. It only went back for a service and no warranty/tweaks.

I'm sure the TD5 Disco engine is a BMW 525 TD engine, was that not 5 cylinders? Need to check my brothers car!
Green Subaru Impreza Turbo, a 'classic'.
Silver Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD, on SORN spec...
Black Disco 3, black van man spec...

Sorry for any incorrect info, just checked, the TD5 engine is Landrovers own work, they had started developing it before they were bought by BMW, continuation of design/production of the engine was aproved by BMW.

that's interesting to know...presumably the 2 litre from 320d and the like, 4 cyl, single turbo etc IIRC...imagine if it was the 3 litre bi-turbo 6

It would need to be - we have one as the family bus, Td4 sport Xs with every conceivable toy and leather bit, which looks the canines... but talk about slow!!
Never ever try to overtake anything more than a cyclist, it's frightening. So much so that after a weekend in Crieff a couple of weeks ago I got so fed up driving it i'm thinking of chopping it in for a focus

I’m never quite sure about NCAT scores. For example a Citroen Pluriel scores the same for adult safety as 3 tonnes of Discovery 3.
I know there is a lot of science in safety these days but I’d rather have a big smash in the Discovery than the Pluriel.

Thinks that Citroens are built like a packet of crisps faction.

It's all about how the crash structures take the brunt of it, and how the interior reacts/collapses around the passengers... thats all I know. But when they showed the Freelander post impact compared to a Fiesta in the same test, you could see why the Freelander was a 2 star while the Fiesta was a 4 star.
The Freelander driver would have been lucky to have kept his legs, while the majority of the Fiesta from windscreen backwards was still intact (drivers door still opened and closed fine, so the structural integrity of the cabin had remained while the front end had crumpled to absorb the force)
The more deformable plasticy areas to absorb the force the better, seemed to be the message.
