Advice needed!!!

Post by mj9 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:39 pm

Ok so I bought a an S2 111s a couple of months ago as an everyday car... knowing my luck i got hgf after a few weeks so spent a lot of money getting that sorted... anyway after all that i got the car back and its been great getting back into it and i am really enjoying it...

anyway, i have just accepted a new job and will have a company car as i will be travelling a lot, which means the elise will just sit on the drive (i dont have a garage) and i would hate to see it just sit there and not get used... on top of that i have been eyeing up the s2 exige recently and thinking about buying a new one next year when i will have a garage (looking for new house with garage just now)...

ok so anyway what do i do?

1) do i sell the elise and keep the money as a deposit for a new exige (next year)
2) keep the elise and trade in for exige next year

Family think i should sell it... gf said i should do what makes me happy (followed by yea you could just get it again next year!! )

I want to keep it but just wouldnt want to see it not get used and waste away!

So far I am thinking about keeping it, well at least for another two months as I dont start new job until november....

Anyway, any advice will be appreciated!

Cheers

Bear in mind that if you are going to sell, do it now; in two months time the winter market will be upon us and fewer people are going to be buying.

:withstupid ..

or hold off till next spring, when the market picks up again.

No reason why you can't get as much use out of it in the winter months as in the summer... just get a warm hat & gloves  .. those bright frosty mornings are great for road runs 8)

If you don't think you will use the Elise much over the winter, I would sell it now and save yourself another 6 months or so depreciation. The other thing to consider is that the S2 Elise was launched almost 7 years ago now so I would not be surprised to see an S3, or probably more like an S2.5 heavily reskinned Elise/Exige launched some time next year which can only have a negative impact on used values. Bad news if you are selling, but maybe good if you are looking for an S2 Exige.

Flog it... if you seriously aren't going to use it, then you are just losing money on it over winter. Thats money that would have gone towards a deposit on either your Exige, or dare I say... house..

I know these things get an emotional attachment to you... but decide with your head. Lets say it depreciates by £1K between now and next April/May (hypothetical)... lets say you use it 10 times over that period. That's £100 a shot (not inc tax/mot & Insurance). Someone posted up a link to Caterham hire the other day which wasn't far off that if you just want some fun.

All IMO...

oh, and I'm with JJ... do it now before winter kicks in.

Cash for car with your company? If this is an option trade for an exige now.

Otherwise I agree punt it now and save around £100 on depreciation alone. Not only that, if you are buying a used exige it will also be getting cheaper each months so you could end up with a big saving or able to afford a newer one.

P.S.
I give you about 6 weeks without a Lotus before you start telling yourself things like "your a long time dead; I work hard; I don't smoke and drink very little" and justify your need for a replacement :D

If you don't have a garage to protect the car, then keeping it whilst not making much or any use of it could be problematic in terms of brakes binding, battery degrading, and other things starting to deteriorate etc. Cars are meant to be doing things :-)

In that case, would be more sensible to sell for now, then buy back in when the time is right for you.

But if you can get access to a garage, or acquire a full size car cover, and you are prepared to run the car every month or so, then hang on in there and enjoy it! This assumes you can afford a wasting asset which costs you insurance and road tax for not many miles, to be sitting around doing nowt...(!)

Sell it now and buy an Exige over the winter months when they are cheaper.....

Cheapest option IMHO.....

if you can afford to keep it then keep it, the choice is yours. have had the co car thing a few times and had to resist selling, but when the weather is good and you go out for a run you remember why you are keeping it. although food is also nice on occasion, as is a house or clothes, holidays etc.

I might be out on a limb here... but, there might be someone interested in your car who is new to the forum...
