I think the accused could be a bit of a fall-guy...with all the nanny-state anti-car smash going on just now, anyone transgressing to a great degree (which let's face it, 170mph really is!) is going to be made an example of.
I agree the taking without permission thing should have been made more of...I guess we have a bigger problem with raw car crime (theft etc) than with 170mph speeders, and anything that deters the low-lives who take what isn't theirs is to be welcomed.
Would be really interesting to explore the rationale behind various "types" of speeding and the amounts beyond each speed limit...
eg...
- doing 75 in a 60 cos you are in a hurry
- doing 125 on a dry empty motorway for the thrill of seeing "what the car will do"
- doing 47 in a 40 cos you were distracted by your phone
- doing 35 in a 30 cos you just didn't happen to notice, it's that slow anyway
- doing 90 in rural 60 cos you are wringing the car's neck and having a great drive
- doing 180 in a 70 cos you have 30 mins with this German Ubercar the likes of which you've delivered for years and always resisted the urge...until now...
Bottom line is he should have saved up and gone to the Ring.
