Rural roads next for the chop

So here we go. If you are 17-25 you won't be allowed to use them. If you are older than that you will be GPS-guided and speed-restricted by same if using them. If you are an OAP you'll be allowed to do what you like on them.

So we are all fecked. Except Tut. God help the 17-yr-old coming towards him ;-)

Did I mention nanny state somewhere else?

Have I been reading too much Clarkson?

Statistics don't you just love 'em. "Middle aged men are more likely to be involved in head on collision". Presumably thats hitting the "Young drivers that are said to be twice as likely as the average motorist to be involved in crashes in which three or more passengers are killed or injured" or the old f%%t doing 20mph on the wrong side of the road going round a blind corner.

People die on the roads, they die for a variety of reasons, some idiocy and some accident. Statistics can show anything, anything you want. These 2 things sell papers...

More cops on the roads would make the roads safer IMHO, by using their discretion and judgment to hand out proper bollockings and lectures instead of arbitrary fines and automatic penalties. What is going to effect Mr sh!t-driver most? A letter through his door 3 months later or being pulled over by a jam sandwich and given a lecture at the road side?

In addition this allows for idiot drivers to be dealt with too, there is no "Lack of lane discipline camera" "Dangerous overtaking camera" or "Driving like a cock, 2" off the bumper of the car in front in heavy traffic in your BMW camera"

I wonder how the RTA casualty rate compares to those injured by violent crime. At least the lads in the car died through their own stupidity and choice - more than can be said for the victims of violent crime, usually.

*IF* you could find the resources to "improve" (read reduced speed limits everywhere and gatsos to back them up) the minor roads, the boy racers would go race somewhere else; danger is part of what they're looking for, so they'll just go and crash somewhere else anyway.

Cheers,
Robin

I hate this sort of sh*t report - mainly cos i hate crappy ill thought out statistics.

Here's one to ponder.

Fact 1 - 2/3 of deaths in england are on these roads

Fact 2 - 3/4 of deaths in scotland are on these roads

Assumptions / ponderings
- Scotland has more of these roads, so as a percentage of journeys it could be possible that scottish rural roads are safer than english ones?

- "Quiet country roads" and "single carriage ways" could encompass(with a mild stretching of the truth) involve areas of the A9. It's a lovely catch all term that could actually mean B roads and any single carriageway A road.

etc etc etc etc

You can make stats say anything in a presentaton. I know, cos i frequently do !
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

What happens if you're aged 17-25 and you live down a rural road? would you have to catch a bus?? They normally don't run down rural roads.

With the GPS-guided thing, everyone could just refuse to have them. It only becomes a nanny state when everyone goes along with the silly ideas.

The only thing I have a problem with on rural roads are tractors without lights, especially this time of year. The police never do anything about that. I wonder how far you'd get with no lights on your car?

Must write to the Commission and ask their advice as to whether this disabled OAP should take his 300hp Elise for a blast around the backroads, or play safe and only take the 220hp one.
