It works by pressing the key fob + a discreet push button in the numberplate recess.

All you have to do is tie a piece of string onto the boot latch (as in the photo above, try pulling it to make sure it moves the latch) then dangle the string down one of the holes in the boot, and tie it off on something that doesn't move, so that it can be got at from the outside.andybman wrote:okay, so what is it i have to do to add this bit of string?

Mine is tied off on one of the wheel arch liner bolt holes which was missing a bolt...
I can open the boot by stretching behind the wheel and pulling the cord.
