I've now clocked up 2500 miles, mostly on the track, with my Duratec and I can say it's been trouble free once I understood the design philosophy. Mine made 207 BHP (on the rolling road) and is basically a standard engine with hotter cams and a good map.

Ignore the blue line

Looking at the power curve you can see that it is limited by RPM, and if you want 260BHP, you need to spend the money on the bottom end. It breaths well as it has the biggest valves they could squeeze in - which gives it a wonderfully flat torque curve

The down side is that its a little heavier than a K and has a galleried oil return (to reduce oil drag) and this can give it a high oil running capacity on the track (high G). This needs careful thought if you want to dry sump it as tanks need to be big.

From a driving point of view its quite a benign engine that pulls hard in any gear and will hit the rev limited without warning -just very little character. It can be mechanically noisy (chain driven cams) and doesn't seem as refined at a K series.

But I wouldn't swap, as in its standard form, you can get them new for £1200 - and that makes track driving a little more relaxing.

It's the Caterham R400 2L engine - although it is built by Ford at their factory to the Caterham spec. Raceco and Raceline do a similar engines that are a little more race orientated but still a reasonable price. http://www.raceline.co.uk/products/inde ... tegoryID=1

Which, it should be said, is a pure race-car, not a road-car conversion like the one we're discussing. Hence no boot and firewall moved forwards.

Road car conversion fits in the space the K left, no modification is needed for anything, as I understand.

I was just speaking to Ali from SLS about this yesterday, strange. I have been thinking in my head of what engine may be next since the K in mine is at 65,000 and its a gamble how much longer it will last certainly worth having some knowledge about. Depending on the funds at the time I would like to look at pro's and cons of replacing with like for like, the duratec and the honda so will keep an eye on this

Bear in mind - an HGF fix is around £800 (£325 if you've got AA P&L) versus £4k plus for the Ford, and £10k for an Audi/Honda conversion?

Mine hit 63k before HGF. I'd find other ways to spend my £10k.

Train of thought - Existing Rover, £800 (variable dependant on what else needs sorted, like liner heights) to fix when it pops an HG versus dump the K series and replace with Ford or Honda.

I don't think he was comparing the cost of fixing an HG on each engine

Mine has already had the HGF before I bought it and has been fully repaired and the VVC mechanism rebuilt (or something renewed can't exactly remember). If I could save my engine I would, I was only reading up on the pros and cons of replacing the engine if it was beyond an ecconomical repair. i.e. Would I try find another K series VVC and drop it in / Duratec Engine / or go for the honda. It was very much depend on my finicial situation at the time. Lets be honest though £4k nowadays is not a lot of money and if you take the running costs of the car over the following years against both engines what would be the difference? Obviously I do not know the answer or the differences in the engines but I would say that I would be very interesting in finding out a bit more about it. I would be prepared to spend that sort of money if it gave me more confidence with the car knowing the engine would be good for the next few years knowing that certain issues where unlikely. :thumbsup
