Car going great. Thanks all!
Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
You can fit a Janspeed 4-2-1 by removing the rear engine mount. It allows you enough room to wiggle the manifold into place. If you fit a solid manifold you will need to change the back engine mount to the adjustable type to stop the engine rocking which can lead to cracking. With my EP solid manifold I couldn't even get everything lined up properly without it.

Would it be a mistake to fit the larger bore 40mm to my mildly tuned car though anyone?

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
I ordered a 4-2-1 as the NHS decided to give me 400 quid since agenda for change (their pay regrading scheme) has finished. I worked for them over 2 years ago...
Anyway, I thought i'd set about dismantling the exhaust in preparation for the new part coming (hopefully tomorrow). Was quite a productive night, I got the bootlid/bonnet off, car up on ramps, down pipe completely off the car and (hopefully) the 5 manifold-> head bolts loosened before darkness fell.
The heat shield at the top of the manifold (the small separate bit) however come off in about 3 bits and I doubt it's going to go back on in 1 piece. Is this a readily available part / is there something else I use instead as I assume it's required!?

S2 Manifold shield should work as Robin suggests. And yes, it's required - I nearly set fire to mine when the heat shield disintegrated.

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
The S2 heatshield will only work if you've ordered a manifold that has the mounting points for that heatshield. As far as I know the only manifolds for which this is true are the OE S2 exhaust manifold and the piper 4-2-1 (the flexi one for sure, probably also the solid one).
If you've ordered the Janspeed or EP manifolds you will need to build something out of a suitable material. The favourite is Nimbus GII sheeting, available directly from Nimbus:
http://www.nimbusmotorsport.co.uk/ProdS ... &CATID=252
You would then cut this and fold to a shape similar to the thing that was bolted to the bulkhead and has probably disintegrated.
It comes in 615x600 sheets - I think you'll be able to make two heatshields out of that - so you can sell the second one on to another S1 owner in the same boat!
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
Thanks Robin, reckon i'm just being a bit think.
It's the piper one I have (with flexi) so it's the s2 part i'll need which of course I can order from MMC.
New manifold is on the car, I also replaced the lambda sensor just in case. Started it up briefly (don't really want to run it too long with no manifold heat shield) and it doesn't sound like it's leaking, had a feel around the joints (without touching the hot exhaust of course). All good
I can confirm with a bit of persuasion that a Piper 4-2-1 without the flexi attached can be fitted to an S1 by only removing the bottom engine mount.
I can also confirm by laying outside under the car most of the day that it's the coldest and windiest day in Dundee this year :

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
Cool. Yes, you can buy the heatshield direct from Lotus dealer - despite some horror stories of the parts department at MMC in the past I ordered some stuff recently, it arrived when expected and was what I had ordered.
Plenty of people also mail order from Bell & Colville and also Christopher Neil I believe.
TBH, the heatshield for the S2 is just a bent bit of Nimbus-like material, but with a seam around the edge to make it more robust. You'll also need a long M8 bolt or a bit of M8 threaded rod and a sleave or some extra M8 nuts - when you get the heatshield it will be obvious - basically it has an eye that is used for mounting to the head, but the eye is 100mm away from the head, so the threaded rod is screwed into the head, then you put the sleave or extra nuts onto the rod to support one side of the eye, then tighten a nut on the other side to clamp the eye in place.
If you have an early S1 with the up-and-over coolant pipe you'll need to be inventive in your re-use of the M8 mounting point for the heatshield (the bracket that holds the driver's side end of that pipe to the head uses the same hole that the S2 later used for the heatshield mount).
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
Perfect , thanks again Robin this is very useful.
I used Bell Colville for my Bilstiens over a year ago and was really happy with their service, but planned to just order from Murrays and see if they could ship it up to a Dundee dealership in the same group. My car is booked into CLCM in Edinburgh for a geo setup on Friday so I hope to have it supplied and fitted by then.
I do have an early s1, but potentially not an early s1 engine so not sure exactly where the coolant pipe runs (assuming that would make a difference), i'll see if I can figure something out either way.
Thanks again.
Chris

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
If you can see the coolant pipe running over the top of the exhaust manifold (in fact, I suspect you would need to have disconnected that coolant pipe in order to fit the manifold in the first place) then you have the up-and-over type. Otherwise you have the later type where the coolant pipe runs across the bottom of the bulkhead, roughly at the height of the manifold-to-downpipe flange.
BTW, it'll be fine to drive the car a bit without the heatshield.
Cheers,
Robin

I'm in the same boat, but I think I'll need a whole sheet of Nimbus as I'm also going to try and fashion a replacement back-box heatshield.robin wrote:The S2 heatshield will only work if you've ordered a manifold that has the mounting points for that heatshield. Is there a better way to attach the rear heat shield as I've rivetted it back on a few times and the rivets then seem to shear. Unless they corrode and fall out....

Nuts and bolts Tom. With big washers. Then it won't fall off.Tom wrote:I'm in the same boat, but I think I'll need a whole sheet of Nimbus as I'm also going to try and fashion a replacement back-box heatshield.robin wrote:The S2 heatshield will only work if you've ordered a manifold that has the mounting points for that heatshield. Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
Tom, your rear heatshield is still in one piece, just not attached to the longerons? In that case I wouldn't bother replacing with Nimbus. Your rivets are probably suffering from electrolytic corrosion, as will the bolts (but they're huge so they wouldn't rot through in your lifetime
). If you fill the hole with duralac before you start you can probably limit this, but the holes are probably ovalled by now, so you'll need to use big washers top and bottom; you may as well just replace with an M6 bolt.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Car pulling to the left [UPDATE] Manifold: replace or repair
Just about still in one piece. We had to bodge one of the holes with some aluminium sheet when we did the manifold at Lawrence's ages ago.
Is bolting easy with a moulded boot box, or is it a case of getting into the back end of the longeron?
