Yup - so very probably the truth!

I wouldn't want a Rolex car, so I'd not buy a Lotus Watch!

I ahve an ORIS. TT1 I think its called, top of the range at the time, rubber edged face and rubber strap.. £1000ish

its worn every day, and I mean every day, even when I am working. Its been submerged in diesel, battered with a mash hammer and dragged accross harled walls..

I treat it like the lotus.. its meant to be used, and used hard. I dont polish it and keep it locked away safe, its used for what it should be used for...

Work mates thing I'm of my nut. thye all have £5 jobs out of argos for work..
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

sorry silly ship story coming up

A engineer called "snowy" used to wear a rolex oyster or something all the time even down the engineroom. He was always bragging about it and showing everyone. Of course we all thought it was a fake so one night in the bar he was showing it off as usual and another engineer grabbed it.

the comment was "Snowy no one is stupid enough to wear a rolex down the pit look its a fake " and he then started to proceed to batter it off the bar.

It turned out it wasn't a fake and there was a wee bit of a bill to pay to ut it back together.

We relised it wasn't a fake when the glass fell out and snowy turned and interesting colour and started swearing loudly.

I really wanted a Tag Heur Monaco

The KC cost me £50 in Florida and the TH would have cost me nearly £2k. It is still 11:07PM not matter which watch you have!

Just as a lady once said that you can never have too many diamonds.......

You can never have too many watches

Most if not all of this forum own a quality car and if you applied the same reasoning when purchasing a watch you would buy something automatic and Swiss. As shug said, it's all about the engineering and pride of ownership
As with cars .........the brand is king

Replicas..........Too Chav!

If bought judiciously, a swiss chronometer can last a lifetime and contrary to earlier posts do not require annual servicing. A twenty year old Rolex/Cartier in good condition still retains about 40% of its original retail cost............wish some of my cars depreciated that slowly.

Providing you don't become too emotionally attached, watches are an easily tradable commodity and some fun can be had in changing models.

To answer the original post as to which watch?

An Omega speedmaster or seamaster chrono is a good first watch.
with a certified movement,
large face (big watches are favoured at the moment) ,
reliable
the right branding also helps reduce depreciation

The auto trader of the watch world is http://www.watches.co.uk

In my watch garage at the moment are:-

Cartier Santos Auto
Cartier Tank
Rolex Daytona S/S (2) One for sale!
Omega Seamaster Chrono
Frank Muller Conquistadore
Panerai Luminor Submersible (Think Big Ben Alarm Clock)

If you want one... get it bought

Thats top watch collecting Iain, with you on all the points! My girlfriends dad has a similar lineup.

I love Frank Muller watches - a "crazy hours" would be bought if money was no object, just as they are such a cool piece of engineering.

That, I'm sorry to say, is pretty much the definition of chav.

Nice lively debate. :D

For what it's worth my old man got an Omega Seamaster for his 40th, and when I was growing up I always always wanted one. When my 21st came up I was lucky enough to get a stainless steel one.

I've now had it 10 years, it looks brand new has never let me down and if my house burnt down that would be the first thing I'd try and drag out. Its the last of the ones before they went all bond flash with the blue dials and the gas release valve bits....nice and subtle and doesn't scream "new money" like some watches can. For me a watch is a very special piece of jewellery and it will always have significance for me as my dad made some sacrifices to get me it. A Rolex is obvious but a Omega is just a bit more subtle.

Buy it as a piece of jewellery to covet but IMHO and if you get a chunk of money back on trade in it's a bonus. 8)

I will now spoil this romantic wistful post about subtlety and not being overly flash by posting a pic of the watch I bought when I was in watches of Switzerland the other day  Life is all about contrast :D

Simon

Not a brand slave myself but the advice is as follows......

As with cars.........buy the wrong brand and it will like "snow off a dyke" depreciate accordingly
