Dodgy email

Post by Gareth » Tue Aug 15, 2006 8:00 am

I'm advertising my Mums Porsche on Auotrader and just received this email:

Hello Sir/Madam,

How are you today?Fine i presume.I want to inquire
about your Car which you placed on advert over the
internet.

I have viewed the Car and i have intrest in buying it
at all cost, the price is ok to me so i feel that would
not slow down this transaction.

I want to know the present condition of the Car and
your prefered method of receiving payments for the
purchase of the Vehicle.

Pls get back to me A.S.A.P.

Await your swift response.

Regards,

David Mark.

OK, so A he can't spell and B he's never seen the car before.

Godd old Nigerian scammers, you have to love 'em.

The unbelievable fact though is that sellers actually get conned into going along with them, so can you really blame them for turning it into a money earner.

I've actually had a cheque from one of these guys.

He made an email enquiry, which made little sense, just wanting to order some stuff. I replied and quoted him a price of about £14,000.

After a few emails he agreed to send the cheque, I recieved the cheque made out on a UK cheque from an international shipping company whith a branch in Lagos (where he wanted the 'goods' shipped too) so, it was almost believeable.

I paid the cheque into the bank and waited............He phoned asking when his 'goods' would be dispatched, I said when the cheque clears and the bank say it's good. "Oh" was his reply.

The bank bounced the cheque, but didn't charge me for it bouncing, and I contacted the company who's cheque it was, but neither they, my bank or the police were the least bit bothered.

Needless to say I never sent anything and am not out of pocket at all, but was a good lesson/illustration in never trusting anyone, esp in Nigeria!
