My current motor is pretty good for mpg, but I dont find that it makes it any more exciting.

But just remember, annual depreciation on many a car can outweigh its relative fuel inefficiencyj2 lot wrote:..and its not alreadydlogan wrote:Its topics like this, and the future of motoring that lies ahead that makes me hanker after a V12, just to like, get it out of the way, before its just totally unaffordable.![]()

Do ALL the sums, just to be sure. You might find you can justify something you otherwise thought was in lottery territory

Re: Petrol Prices
On our euro tour a year and a half ago we stopped for fuel in Luxembourg on the way home - filled the tank for circa £30.00
- here it takes £58.00.
There seems to be an awfully large premium on super unleaded also - sometimes as much as 13p per litre - not sure how that's justified?

Re: Petrol Prices
Depends what type of car you have as i'm pretty sure i've read that the majority of ECU's learn the new RON pretty quickly and you as such you lose any benefit.
Now what is interesting is whether or not Supermarket fuel is better/worse than Shell/BP.

Re: Petrol Prices
Depends on the ecu type and what it does with the extra available horse power.
Well known within Honda circles, where they reset the standard ecu then run it hard on a particular super petrol that you get power gains.
Where as the Jap Subaru ecu doesnt learn and always thinks your running Jap fuel and wont adjust. So they just run lean.
When Andy Forrest mapped my Subaru he asked what stations I had locally and mapped it for optimax. He told me all other suppliers make their Super petrols using adatives and that only Shell make it "properly". I only use Shell unless its an emergency

Re: Petrol Prices
McKean will confirm but I believe all comes from same refineries as "the big boys" and therefore any differences are down to choices of miniscule % additives.X7LDA wrote: Now what is interesting is whether or not Supermarket fuel is better/worse than Shell/BP.
Indeed there is a logic that says use supermarket fuel because the turnover in their tanks is higher than "quieter" fuel stations hence reducing risk of contaminants etc.
We just find the cheapest, or spend our Tesco 10p fuel vouchers, TBH!

Would it be possible to get less miles from supermarket fuel than BP fuel?? We have tried using supermarket fuel twice now with the same results.

Re: Petrol Prices
I have been told that supermarket diesel has a much higher bio-diesel content. I know of a fleet operator that changed from supermarket fuel to bp/shell, and saw an improvement of MPG across the fleet. Also, the bio-diesel is not so kind to your engine etc,.. not on all cars anyway. The mechanic I use has advised me to stay away from supermarkets for diesel and petrol.

It's all f*cking voodoo I guess.

In our experience. The Skoda does 51mpg to work. Tank 43mpg. Bike racks fitted, deduct 2-5mpg according to windspeed.
Bikes on roof of Skoda, it returns 37-40mpg.
MINI returns about 35mpg no matter what we do!
Elise struts around with 40mpg mostly, bit higher on longer runs, bit less if KH is involved.
They get whatever fuel is cheapest in our locale, end of.
Point about biodiesel is noted, Dom...Skoda manual says avoid but assumed light dilutions were not going to cause a big prob.
