What Porsche for sub 30k?

Post by DDtB » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:12 am

If you were going to spend say £15-£30k on a Porsche, which one would it be?

Something you could use every day and do around 10k miles p.a.

Cayman S, 996 C4S, 997 Carrera S, A.N. Other?

No Boxsters allowed. They're only for ladies and gentlemen of questionable sexuality who live in Crieff. :D

Daydreaming just now, but planning a job move soon and if the commute drops, the car will change and I think I need to try a Porsche at least once, even if it isn't a GT3 !

Cheers!

Dave.

if it were me, a cayman S. But the boxster S is 99% as good, and a good chunk cheaper for the same age of car. I reckon 911's will be money pits if used properly.

I'd agree. Poxster is basically a convertible Gayman, so why not?

I'd try to get an early 997 - EVO says it can be done for £25k or thereabouts. Writeup in recent issue.

Or a late 993. Perhaps same or more money but probably more stable in future value.

And yes a budget to take good care of the thing will be imperative.

Which is why I don't have one. Yet.

Dave,

If you factor in depreciation then the only sensible Porsche would be the 993. However you will be at the top end of the budget to get a really decent one and will have to do a fair bit of searching.

If you are looking for a 911 then do not discount the 964. For me it's got the older look of the classic Porsche and is substantially cheaper and is easily liveable like a modern car. You should be able to pick up a very good C2 for you budget although of course you won't be close to RS (around £60k + money now).

Both the older 911's will cost you more in servicing costs but lots of specialists out there, especially in the central area.
You will also have a bit more of an exclusive ownership experience when you are driving it, 996/997 are now so common on the streets they don't turn heads any more, where an older Porsche has more head turning ability and less chance of someone shouting expletives at you and giving you the Gareth Hunt handshake.

As other have said he Cayman is a cracking piece of kit, although I found the older ones a little bit dead in pedal feel.

My opinion is that if your wanting to get on a Porsche, then why not get the one they all rave about and that's a 911.

When I was searching for Sandra's 911 I made a list of specialists to contact, some of them are pretty much renowned in Porsche circles whilst others are not so well known. Here's the list to help you once you have decided:

I'd you are central based then more than happy to let you have a look at Sandra's 911 and go through the things to look out for. Suspension in getting renewed in next couple of weeks so should handle better.

Cayman S. Without hesitation. Lovely handling, quickish, nice to look at in the right colour/ wheel combo, very practical and comfortable. Can be used every day without issue and soaks up the miles nicely. Then when it's play time it is can be a lot if fun.
I've said before that I think theyre the best kept secret in everyday motoring.

What happened to the M3?

Boxster Spyder or Cayman S.

Depends how practical you want it to be.
If you need the rear seats then it has to be a 911 in some form but if not the Cayman is actually a more practical car for 2 people. There's far more storage space in it and what there is is also much easier to get to than on a 911.

I thought my Cayman was a great car and I probably regret getting rid of it for the Exige and I'd definitely have another if it weren't for the lack of extra seats. The only worry about them is they do have a reputation for engine problems as do the 996/997s unless you look at any of the GT/Turbo ones so a Porsche warranty would be very worth having. Prices for the warranty are on the Porsche website but it's around £800-1000 for a Cayman/997 assuming it has FPSH.

You'd easily get a gen 2 Cayman for under £30k which means lower tax and better mpg. If I was buying a Cayman though I think I'd be tempted by a £20kish pre-March 2006 car with as low miles as possible to get the low tax and have less of a resale problem after doing 10k miles. The cars will take the miles but you will pay a hefty price in depreciation if you've even got anything like average mileage (10k pa) on it.

You could also look at any 996 (including turbos) and you should be able to get a 997 C2S on a 2006/07 plate (possibly with warranty) too.
I also wouldn't discount the Boxster but I'd ignore the Spyder for a daily drive.

993 is obviously another option. The biggest hurdle is finding a good one but there are good ones from £20k ish upwards. Sub-£30k you'd be looking at a C2/C4 as the wide body S models go for around £10k more than an equivalent Carrera. It's quite different from a Cayman/997 though and I'd keep aside a big chunk of your budget as a maintenance fund if you went down that route. They do look great though and much rarer than newer cars. Welcome to come and look at mine if you were considering one. Mine has probably had more weekend use already than the Exige did because of the rear seats allowing me to put Ethan in the back.

If you do go Cayman/997 try and get one with the PSE fitted, it sounds superb :)

Agreed there are plenty on awesome Porsches within budget that would lose a Cayman S fairly quickly. However, when expensive cars become cheap, cheap repairs become expensive - if you know what I mean. Turbo S'ssss were what £90k, maybe? So thats what your maintaining. Cayman S'sss were always meant to be more affordable everyday cars. Maybe a safer purchase?

2 seats issue noted. Would agree with above sentiment. Get an early S and dont worry about depreciation to the same degree.

Sorry, I've changed my mind. Hold out for a new boxster. Looks great. Circa £30k.
