Steering Rack

Post by jimbo » Thu Aug 30, 2012 9:45 am

Anybody know where I can get my steering rack reconditioned? What's it likely to cost?

Cheers

James

"As mine is LHD they can not use a stock exchange, but will send it away for a rebuild for the same price of £97 plus £15 shipping, collection and delivery, so a complete door to door for £112, which is pretty good going."

They should be able to do you an off the shelf replacement for RHD.

I used them too, James. I think Robin did as well. Know their stuff, and good service.

You'll be AMAZED at the difference.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

Hmm... my Exige has done a fair few miles now and i'm wondering should i be looking into this too... Is there a quick way to check for play in the rack?

AFAIK you can jack up the car, and wiggle the wheel about to feel for some loose play. You will need to hold the steering rack near the track rod ends to ascertain if any play is the rack or (more likely) the track rod end.... (though I'm no expert!) :thumbsup

I would expect you will notice more 'clunks' from the front end too.

Yeah that's how Ali showed me that it was on its way out, but the track rod ends also need replacing, particularly my left one.

Replace the track rod ends at the same time, they are £14.77 each from Geary.
