Agree with you entirely Robin - facebook is not really for me and don't trust any supposed "privacy" that they have. Even with other sites I guess with working in a datacentre it spooks me out a little having family pics hitting about on some random server - but it's difficult to avoid these days I suppose.

Cam - does Picasa allow security? It is pretty easy to get to our wedding photos on your Picasa for example using google

That's because it's in my "Public Gallery". Only a handful of my albums are there - couple of SE events, your wedding (due to the myriad of distinguished guests who may have wanted to view the pics...can move out of Public now if you wish!). All others are in my Unlisted Gallery which I believe to be private. You get links to that periodically, from me, when I choose to share them. But without the gobbledygook link, you couldn't access anything otherwise. Feel free to try.

There *might* be a loophole for some albums which I have published a link to on here, for example...but since those are for SE events, I'm still not that fazed TBH.

I like the easy sync between the PC Picasa application (I assume it has a Mac version?!) and the online web albums. I was under the impression that it broadly mimicked iPhoto, but could be wrong.

As for Dropbox...I am happy to refer you

Photos are cool where they are not a problem - TBH just wondered if you knew since the kids were in quite a few of them.

Another +1 for Dropbox. I run it on Android (Galaxy Note) and it uploads photos almost instantly over 3g (unlimited data contract) to Dropbox. When i login to my PC the photos are there. Never thought about sharing my account with the rest of the family (tend to do mail shots) but that is a good idea !

It's what they might then do with it, and where it might later show up ... there are some truly sick people out there. The other issue is that if you reveal name + image and they can work out where abouts you are (e.g. what schools they might go to), then they can show up at end of school time with plausible stories like "Hi John, I'm your uncle Bobby. Your mum cannot come to collect you today and she asked me to come and get you." Etc. Etc. There are people that will invest a year of research in working out habits, patterns, etc., to be able to put themselves in the right place at the right time to make this scam work.

Perhaps not something everybody would worry about, but it's hard to draw the line between rational protection and paranoia when it's your own kids that are involved ...

Risk is made up of two parts: Probablity (in this case almost imeasurably low) and impact (in this case utterly devastating).

I don't see how a non-parent (myself included) could truely assess the impact. We non-parents can really only assess the probability which is only half the story, and why the mitigating action might seem a little disproportionate from the outside.

Usually I hate hearing, "Oh, you're not a parent, you wouldn't understand" but in this case it probably applies.

I guess in my mind, the chance of that kind of scam is less probable than a snatch and grab whilst your kids are unattended whilst out playing. I walk past a primary school every day walking my dog, kids are always wanting to come over and pat him. Surely the fact that kids still seem to want to speak to strangers is a bigger worry for parents than some potential weirdos on the Internet?? Like Graeme says though, we're not parents so I don't understand that mindset.

Like I said, it's probably an over-reaction to a perceived risk rather than part of a logically constructed framework of risk/cost/benefit analysis. Unlike your life which is a perfect example of calculated risks and rewards

It's a strange one - as I know perfectly well someone could take a picture of him without my knowledge - but it's just a feeling of protection I guess. As we all know there are some particularly sick people out there and as was mentioned above - though the risk is small the consequences are potentially devastating.

I suppose the way I look at it is that I make sure I shred all letters, correspondence etc that is addressed to me so someone can't get their hands on it - why should I be any less careful with the wee mans identity - after all he's not old enough to make that choice yet.

My wife and I decided not to put any photos of our kids on facebook. Just don't feel the need and would rather they weren't out there than otherwise.
