I hope this thread doesn't offend non Porker lovers.

Since there are a few SE Porsche owners (latest being Dave ), I have started this thread to keep all Porker talks in one place. Similar idea to the "Watch lovers" thread.

My Porker is a 996 C2 with sports exhaust, seats, suspension, LSD and factory GT3 aero kit.

Here is my thought of it after tracking it at KH yesterday (taken from the Trackday section).

"After two cancellations at Knockhill due to snow/ice, I have finally managed to track the C2 for the first time. For a change, the weather was excellent!

With the medium compound R888s, the 280 bhp C2 is by far the most stubborn car to make it go sideways. It has so much traction for the power delivery. I really need 350 bhp or less grippy tyres for longer sideways so I gave up half way and kept the laps tidier. The brakes started to fade after 6 laps or so. Lucky I have replaced the brake lines (now braided) and the fluid (now Castrol SRF) after purchasing the car. OME set up would have boiled in 5 laps

After 60 laps, almost new rear pads were down to metal. I now need the new rear disks too due to scorching . The front pads still have 40% left so either the pads are different compounds or brake is rear biased. In any case I shall be replacing both pads with more track oriented ones which I could use on the road too. I may go back to Ferodo DS2500 which I used in the 360 and worked well on track.

Overall, it was fun tracking the C2 and hope the passengers enjoyed it."

My history with the marque has been a lengthy one with periods of serial buying/trading for around thirty years.
Once your smitten by the sound of a wailing flat six it generally means a long term commitment.
I have a similar infatuation with the Lotus product, as it is in such stark contrast to the sometimes sterile levels of build quality that Porsche owners enjoy
(Wheeler Dealers stripped a 30yr old 928 to the bare shell ........and it did not have one rusted nut or bolt!)

Current smoker is a well used/maintained 2005 Boxster S
I have covered over 40k in this one with a fair few trackdays as well
A few tweaks - more air in and more air out....... (996 Plenum and Sports Exhaust)
Big brakes - Pagid Discs and Pads with fully synthetic fluid
I will probably have a crack at the Super Lap series, but it appears to be changing from the simple formula that it should have been, to something less savoury that may reward the cash for horsepower crew!

Currently contemplating cranking the mid life crisis up a gear with a new Boxster/Cayman with daily use/trackdays in mind





This thread could run in perpetuity.......... when DDTB starts to contribute on how he will effect a Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen programme and change everything that took millions of pounds to develop on his new steed tempered with updates from the Boxster Spyder/996/993 crew

I will get in early, before the love in starts, and give my tuppence worth....

Unless you want a very fast, very capable, very reliable and very "conservative" car... don't buy a 996 Turbo S.
My Turbo S had 483 BHP and was a hard car to describe.
On the one hand, it was almost like a one-trick pony, since the only thrill it gave was when it went ballistic (which it could do with ease)
On the other hand, it did every other trick effortlessly and could probably do the same thing, day in and day out.
I can see why some folk love them. I didn't quite hate mine, but I did know within a week or so of owning it that it wasn't the car for me.
I gave it about a year before selling and can't remember any memorable drives. Takes all sorts

My project...........

911 Supersport 1986
I've had it for around 8 years, and over the years have replaced the interior, exterior (full respray and replacement wings), and had the engine/gearbox rebuilt by ninemeister.

For the Porsche Enthusiast (club members like this stuff)
The car was the first of it's type imported and first registered by Porsche as A911. It was used as a press car, featuring in Autocar who took it to Reims and the Ring. For a 1986 car it had an impressive list of extras, inc heated seats and headlight wash. It also came with a huge paperwork file, including the original sale receipt of £53k (I can't get my head around that).

Getting out of historical mode, it's an interesting drive..........something different. The engine is sweet after the rebuild - dyno'd excess of the original 230bhp. Handling - there is more grip than you'd think thanks to the turbo body and wide tyres, but you really don't want to find the limit. Steering is direct (no servo) heavy and it helps to keep the fuel tanks filled to keep some weight on the front. I'm not sure on the weight, but someone mentioned 1100kg, so acceleration is of a modern standard although gearchanges take a bit of perfecting.

There are still a few things to sort out, but no rush I plan on having it for a long time.

Seemingly the Spyder lasted until lunchtime until it sold. Did a S.Eliser purchase it?

So.... may as well post an update.

Picked up a 996 C4S at the weekend. Didn't want a silver one and wasn't going to buy privately... but then did both. The silver is actually really, really nice in the flesh though and I genuinely like it. Glad I stopped looking at the Black/Blue ones only and considered this one.

Overall it's a very nice car, but I have had a couple of 'teething' issues.

1st one is that the nice chap who sold it to me was sure it had a dealer fit Porsche Exhaust on it (over £4k to retrofit now) so I was very pleased indeed about this. We spoke about it a couple of times to be sure it was a genuine Porsche one as it was one of the options I was determined to have. Unfortunately it only has the £400 tips from a sports exhaust and the rest is standard. Genuine mistake by the seller but it's me that will lose out. Oh well. Still sounds ok on the standard exhaust though and keeping my eye out for a used Porsche Sports one whilst thinking about other options for the future to unleash the full soundtrack.

Then... after 2 days of fun in it, the battery died today. I'm guessing he put a full charge into it to sell it and it probably hasn't been used that much over the winter. It was serviced 2k miles ago, in October. Battery looks like the original one so it's over due to be changed anyway. No biggie.

Aside from that, it definitely doesn't look, feel or drive like a 10 year old car. It's bloody awesome and anyone who thinks that a 911 is just the same as a fast BMW or the like is talking out their arse and doing something wrong imho. I've had fast BMWs and stuff and this feels way more special and exotic. It's like no other car I've driven to date.. in a good way. It's also much more chuckable and nimble than I thought it would be and it's a great place to sit. I think it will make my commute much more satisfying. I do need to get the alloys refurbed as they're the only thing that doesn't look brilliant (recommendations in the Glasgow area welcome!!). Several Aberdeen winters have taken their toll and there's a wee bit of corrosion bubbling up under the paint. Fine from a few feet away, but not up close.

I think I may love this car more than I thought I would.... once it I get it back from Motortune... obviously!

Proper pics and stuff to follow. Now need to find a powerwasher for snowfoam fun. I don't think I'll mind keeping this one clean!

To add to this thread, I am 2 years into having my 2010 997 C2. All I can say is I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Why?

Well its too damn good. It does everything superbly, its not got any flaws. I have run numerous British (ish) cars in the last 10 years (2 TVRs, 2 Caterhams, and 2 Lotus) and they were all compromised in some way. The 997 just does everything, its quick, very economical, very comfortable, has great feedback from the steering, and with winter tyres meant I never had any fear of ever being stuck. With switcheable PSE it sounds fantastic too (Sorry Dave)

So why hate it?

Well I bought the 345bhp cooking model. I did this as it was the way to get into the newest car possible (3k miles) its now 3 yr old and 9k miles. But now its diminishing returns if I upgrade, as fundamentally I am sitting staring at the same cabin which isnt a big enough change (although a gt3 drive might sway me)

I like to change cars but everything I now look at is compromised, and nothing matches up, so I cant get excited about anything, so it look like it will stay for a bit.
