TBH, I think Chris has found his level with these videos. I do think a full broadcast show featuring him would be a touch samey - he's great, but I did notice that watching it with Elaine last night (who's a petrolhead, no doubt, but perhaps not as geeky as me about it) that she did lose interest a bit towards the end. 20 minutes on a feature works well for the purist, but TV just doesn't aim at purists.
Also, it's been seen when he works for larger concerns, like Evo or Autocar, that he tends to get bored with the stuff he's handed, so craved the creative freedom of his own show. Which works great online - I just don't think the mass market appeal is there to go to TV, unless it's on a Discovery channel or the like and I doubt they'd give him the freedom he gets from Drive.
Top Gear has its issues, which I comment on pretty frequently, but it's clearly doing the format right for the largest amount of casually interested viewers - going by figures.
