I'm not sure what sizes the actual pads are and the photos seem correct so they may fit. However there's a gulf between Pagid made standard material pads and the Pagis RS42 & 14 that most on here will mean by Pagid. Not saying there's anything wrong with the ones listed, just don't expect the performance that others rave about (RS42s have been one of the best things I've done to my car).

Re: MMC first time CONT...
Fair enough on the performance aspect of the brakes, but i was just posting this up for Jimbo who I'm guessing is on a tight budget, just to show what he could possibly get. I've also just had a check and it appears that they do a 283mm disc for £27 which I'm guessing is probably the correct one then.
RE: MMC first time CONT...
Thanks for the help guys, I'm definitely on a budget but want to balance that with buying parts that are decent as well. I'll have a good mooch around and see what's what

slight drift but without reference to who’s fault the wants of repair are I’d be interested to know what exactly you need done. I’m asking because want to know what I should be looking at on my own car.
That and because I’m nosy – obviously.

Check http://www.eurocarparts.com/for the discs. I sourced plain discs from them for my old car and paired with Mintex 1144 seemed pretty good. Listing as £26 fronts and £21 rears for Pagid plain vented discs. No fancy drilling or grooves but recognised name and AFAIK the S1 (post mmc brakes) were plain vented discs from factory.

Re: MMC first time CONT...
I'd never used the old MMC, preferring independents, but due to the still-growing thread on here praising how their servicing department was turned around, I've used them for the past couple of services/MOTs.
Whilst the work and their customer service were fine, I have to say I found them to be very expensive, so I'm often puzzled by the comments about how they've done great deals for folk, less than cost price, etc, etc.
I think their labour rate is in the region of £90 ph, which, if you have a few jobs each taking a few hours, can quickly escalate into a 4 figure bill.
I also wonder whether having an in-house MOT station means they are more likely to be sticklers for details that might be passed by local/friendly places, knowing there's a good chance their workshop will get the nod for the remedial work.
In my own case, the bills in the past couple of years have dwarfed what I typically paid previously, so I'm thinking of going back to independents. Part of the issue for me is justifying that labour rate for a rather old, and not particularly complex, car. I think I've seen even the likes of Arnold Clarke offering reduced rates for older vehicles, recognising that people look into other options after warranty has expired.

Craig emailed me today, to say that amongst all the other work that I'm getting for way less than it really should cost, he's going to throw in some additional service work to sort some niggles out as well! He said it was an early Christmas present given how down I must be about the unexpected expenses. Well chuffed! Top bloke!

Out of interest, can you use MMC discs with different pads? Like pagids?

In short no, Pagids will trash them, they need to be specific MMC pads. cheers Edjimbo wrote:Out of interest, can you use MMC discs with different pads? Like pagids?

Ok cool, thanks.
So for clarity, what size and width are the front disc for my S1?

All standard S1 discs from and rear are 282 mm dia, 26 mm thickness.
Are yours mmc? Nizzy may be able to clean them up and Elise parts do pads.

About the size of a large dinner plate and twice the thickness.

Hey Jim,
I know how you feel and feel your pain, possible a bit greater pain in my case
but I'll get you a price for discs and pads in the morning if you like and can have them delivered to craig
Can also price the ball joints etc, send me a list of parts and I'll get you a special price but even so I don't think you'll get the car better than it's ever been, I had her pretty sweet
Glad you've found trust in a garage who will look after you, I'm sure you'll be delighted when you get her back
