What a coincidence Ross. Verian has a list of jobs that I have to do before the wedding, the first one being stop a drip from a radiator in the lounge, amounting to about one drop a day. Told her there was nothing i could really do, nut was nipped up tight, just old age. Not good enough, fix it, so get out the monkey wrench and try and tighten it up whilst she watched.
No surprises, pipe separates and boiling water shoots out at supersonic speed. No panic of course even with the third degree scalds, tried my thumb over the pipe but the pressure was too strong along with the pain, jammed a towel on it and sent the cause of it all to get the push on 15mm end cap that I keep in my kitchen bits and pieces drawer for such occasions, and then to get buckets to collect the black liquid that was draining out of the radiator.
The plastic push on cap worked on the pipe, and I also had a screw on steel end cap to use for the thermostat outlet. Mop up a few gallons of water and good as new, no need to turn the oil boiler off, and plenty of other radiators and the stove to do the job.
Get the Insurance policy out as I paid extra for emergency call out, £2,000 for up to five callouts, unlike Robin I have great faith in Insurance(sic), but then get connected to some specimen that must have been on day release from
http://www.weuseanytwat.com, and try to explain in one syllable words that I have stopped the flow but need the pipe re-connecting as I can not use my CH. He is obviously reading from an idiots crib sheet, and tells me that I am only covered for them to stop the flow which I had already done, but not for any repair work to make it good again.
Got him to put me through to the Organ Grinder, but he was only one more step up the evolutionary ladder so afraid to say that I lost my temper, which is not the norm for me. Fortunately I have a box of leftover plumbing bits from when I fitted the stove which included a self cutting tap, so I will fit that tomorrow which will cut off the flow and then fit a new compression joint. The alternative would have been to drain of the CH system, which in this place is not something to undertake lightly and would also mean losing the CH. At present we have gale force winds and torrential rain, just had to rescue the chickens and bring them inside to dry off, so will stick with plan A.
Reckon I have redeemed myself after the car fiasco, hopefully will not have to go the the burns unit as the skin is peeling off nicely by itself, but see what I mean about needing a new carer?
All this from a little drip.

ps:- Halifax will not get away with it though.
