Duralac in Edinburgh Today. Any ideas?

Post by Ferg » Mon May 12, 2014 9:22 am

Hi Folks,

I was doing the toelinks at the weekend and had everything needed except Duralac. I've put ACF50 on the new bolts for now but want to Durlac them (stainless steel into aluminium uprights) before I torque up for good.

Problem is I'm away this week and only window for the next week to finish the job is tonight. Car is at my folks house so want to get it out there way. Does anyone know where you might get Duralac in Edinburgh?

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers
Ferg

Yacht chandlers was the classic suggestion.

Know plenty of folk that use copaslip as an alternative, but it probably won't do the same job in the long term.

I'd be reluctant to use duralac on threads, it's not what it was designed for. I'd use a small amount of a graphite based anti seize (as opposed to copper slip).

I've had duralac on threads going into a blind hole before. It puts the run on/off torque up a fair amount, not ideal on an alu thread.

It's what Lotus have advised since the year dot though, so what's to say their torque values aren't calculated with duralac? Not what it was designed for, but has been used for the purpose for the thick end of 20 years now on Elises...

If you check I think lotus spec duralac for the mating surfaces and Permabond A131 for the threads. Link below.

Is permabond more available? Searching for this stuff stocked locally isn't going too well.

No it's a bugger to find. Try commercial plumbers as I believe it is designed for joints in mild steel pipe

Just a thought check to see if Permabond is only for the steel to alloy threaded interface. If you are steel to steel then just use any standard thread lock.

Shug you salty sea dog, nice suggestion!

BTW, t'internet suggests that copper is also responsible for galvanic on Aluminium so copper slip maybe not best idea.

Will keep looking for permabond before I buy. The bolts I took out definiately had Duralac on them.

Hence graphite based anti seize.

Shug, it's OK. :)

Would a basic graphite grease like CV joint stuff be equivalent, or should it not have molybdinum in it? You used to be able to just buy a pot of graphite grease. Doesn't seem so easy now days?

Permabond A131 is the same as Loctite 572. They are both pipe/thread sealant and not a thread lock. Probably easier to find the loctite equivalent than permabond.
