I think loving your job is pretty rare. At the end of the day most people would rather no have to come to work everyday surely?
Most of the time I enjoy my job, but i'd still rather not HAVE to work every day. There are days when i'd happily go and do something else (like this week) but on balance i'm pretty happy with my lot. I think that's about as good as you can aim for !
Still find it amazing that you can't just walk into a highly paid job that you'd love with no experience, skills or qualifications. Just shows how fcuk up the world is nowadays

I have a couple of staff working for me who constantly complain about how sh*t their job is - never goes down well when I tell them we'd all be better off if they did something about it and walked

I think if you read what I actually said earlier... I was asking if there were might be some worthwhile jobs you could get into without a ridiculous amount of training or cost... not with no training or experience etc.
I'm more than happy to invest in training and do what needs to be done for some possible options, e.g. what Phil has done recently proves that it's possible to change your career. But obviously it's a bit late for me to go and become a doctor or something given the timescales and cost of that. I'd be a sh*t doctor anyway. Similarly I'm never going to be a red arrows pilot

Life's too short to just accept your lot imho. So many options and experiences to be had out there, it'd be daft not to at least consider if some are possible when you have the opportunity to do so. I've got no family commitments, cash in the bank and an open mind. What more do I need!?

I used to love my job, interesting, well paid, great people etc.
Most of that is gone now, driven away by all the procedural sh*t put in place by the nerds that have taken over the O&G industry.
A lot of my friends say the same thing, is it true or is it just an age thing? Not sure.
I still work with some fantastic people and in the office I'm in at the moment 95% of us get on like we're best mates. We all agree on one thing though, that 'the job' is a crock and that the people in charge really know how to make an easy job difficult.
I sometimes daydream about going back to driving one of our taxis but I know from experience that after a year or so I'll be wanting to go back to this, can't win!
My dream job? Motorcycle tyre tester, exclusively the job of ex bike racers so that's that out!
If I won the lotto I'd probably be restoring old cars and bikes though, maybe that should be my dream job.
Best of luck Dave, not easy to change direction, especially at your age

I used to really enjoy my Job and laugh at all the oldtimers who moaned about all the changes, which were, in my view, for the better. Now I'm turning into one of them.......

Doctor Dave. What a terrifying thought.

I thin the issue is changing jobs is easier when you do it in the same company as people will take a punt on you as they know you. Most, if not all, of the jobs I've had in Sky i wouldn't have got if i had applied externally and not been known to the company. So it might be an idea to get into a company with your current experience and then move within.
Or you do the back to uni thing - when you look mrs donkey doing teaching although it was a year without salary it was only a year and allowed a complete career change. I've personally not a huge fan of MBAs but that could enable a change. Both the silver fox and my other mate Dave did MBAs as a way to change career. You don't necessarily, as they first though, get a return on your investment in terms of salary but it does give you other options.
