Probably also over budget and build time would make it too late for winter use unless they had any ready to go, but this attracted my attention:

I would go for a galv chassis and bulkhead before I considered the looks and paint. It's nice bit for that money you could get a custom build on a new chassis.

When we were looking at the Beemer we also contacted Twisted about a Defender. However in the end we decided that a 335D would be a lot better long distance.

Loads of companies doing similar things: Nene Overland etc but unfortunately that price is well over the budget.

Seen what looks to be a couple of nice ones in EBay but without being close to them it's difficult to tell their exact condition. Don't want to spend a shed load of cash wasting on inspections unless it's a "Buy it Now".

Given that the chassis has had previous repairs I would be wary.
Another thing to consider is that the series vehicles are all leaf sprung. The 90/110 and defenders are all coil sprung. It makes a huge difference to the ride and handling.

That is a low price if it's as good as it looks - although the series LRs are waaay more agricultural than Defenders

Looks good - on the surface. Would need a good poke around the chassis.

The colour is nothing that a tin of paint and brush wouldn't fix.

As Dom says. The body is aluminium so will always look good after a fresh coat of paint.
Engines gearboxes etc are cheap, easily repairable and pretty robust. The real worry is rot.
You can pick up a new galv chassis for about £1500-£2000 but it will cost you the same again to have it fitted.
Look at the rear cross member, the sills and the outriggers for rot. These tend to go before the main chassis. The rot also tends to work from the back to the front. (I think they leak so much oil that the front and middle is protected!)
They recon if a Landover is not leaking it's empty!

ive had my 2003 forrester for over a year now, i put new shocks on it and other than that its only ever wanted for petrol and brake pads.

i have a set of proper vreidestin tyres on the standard 15" steel wheels and a nice set of alloys off a turbo with summer tyres, goes everywhere, tows anything and is really comfy with cruise control, heated seats etc.

it looks like a bit of a shed, but its a great car. 150k miles and still smooth!

The guy is a hairdresser and bought it for fishing trips up to the islands but realised a Defender is not for him or his girlfriend. Hoping its a good one and I can convince him to base the sale subject to inspection !!!

At 1986, I'm sure it will have the 2.5 diesel or Turbo diesel, not the later and sought after 200 or 300tdi engine. The 2.5 wasn't that powerful, but it may have been replaced by a Tdi. Easiest difference to spot is the Tdi has a finned alloy rocker cover, where the 2.5 has a pressed steel cover.
Unless it has a Tdi, or you really don't want to go anywhere remotely fast, and don't mind lots of oil leaks, I'd avoid the old 2.5 engine.

Reckon it would mean Sandra could get an extra 5mins in bed before heading to work. What happens once a corner comes up may be a slight concern

SWB 4x4's are a bad idea for road use if you ask me.
When I lived in Oz they were well known for rolling over very easily. They even had adverts on the TV warning people of that fact, same with the early MK1 defenders.
I'd stick to LWB.
