Can I ask SE community a favour ? cast a vote please ?

Post by scott_e » Thu Oct 09, 2014 7:40 am

Wondering if I can ask a small favour of the SE community.

We are trying to raise our company profile at this years Web Summit by getting votes for our CEO to talk about IoT (Internet of Things).

If possible please click on this link and select LIKE:
http://websummit.net/campaigns/peoples- ... #entry-225

Sorry , it needs a Facebook login.

Not a problem if its a problem, just thought I would ask. Completely understand if this is again any principles in any way what so ever.

Currently on 23 votes and have about 80 to catch up , its a long shot but any vote helps

Thank you for reading.
Scott

IoT went live.....did anyone notice?

Much like sex when we were 16 everyone is talking about the Internet Of Things and yet few people are actually doing it and those that claim to can’t get anyone to stand next to them and say “yes I did it with them”! Few people doubt that the IoT will change the World but how will this all unfurl? Concirrus has been in the IoT for nearly 3-years and has something very unusual…. real customers and real solutions across Insurance, Fleet, Facilities and Healthcare. In a thought provoking presentation we’ll show how the IoT has been delivered today and what’s next.

Done!
Albeit I'd consider myself relatively techie, and not sure that his opening gambit really sells it too well...

So, having watched the 90 second video I now understand the term Internet of Things, but is there a more concise way of explaining exactly what part Concirrus plays in this?

This is something I struggle to articulate in a clear way every time I am asked and what the marketing video is supposed to do. Essentially we have built an "elastic" data collection architecture "in the cloud" in such a way that its easier getting any connection aware device to talk to it for what ever purpose is required (data collection , command and control , automation , notification etc). Our selling point is we are a one stop shop for everything if required (hardware , sim , airtime , services , storage, applications) involved to get your idea working. Practical applications of this are wide spread hence IoT soon to be an overused label in the same way"cloud" is if not already. I think the video is the best effort to describe this to date but from your feedback it does suggest something is still missing.

The Internet of Things is maybe best described as having a number of connected devices per person. Not talking about laptops and phones but anything that can collect any real world metric. And the data maybe consumer facing but more likly feeding back data to the manufacturer.

Interesting idea. Does it have to be cloud based?

Ask 20 people what IoT is and you'll get 30 answers. :)

Not sure if you mean our solution or our customers.

Regarding our data collection solution the reason we selected "the cloud" (Azure) as a platform is because we have come from a .net development background. Azure allows you to run stateless machines (effectively servers where by the settings are lost on restart) which lends itself well to auto scaling a solution on demand. Cloud based platforms allows us to provision resources in minutes when required and turn them off again when not. Flexible near unlimited storage in non relational database frameworks allows us to avoid traditional database growth issues. As far as products that are integrated with our platform they can be hosted anywhere they need to be.

Interesting stuff, though your large interconnected diagram does kinda put the fear in me ;) Possibly not one for the tin foil hat brigade anyway.

I work in healthcare research where linkage projects are my day to day and the term data warehouse is like swearing so always find it interesting when a cloud based solution presents itself with the appearance of distributed sources connecting together - though I guess connecting is the word rather than necessarily linking on a larger scale.

We recently run a linkage project between health, council and police data and it just fell apart (well, health and council were ok but that's another story), though in fairness, governance was the real issue.

The number of connected devices is extraordinary, though easy to see as I sit at my desk at work which has PC, laptop, smart phone and IP phone on it.
Then a quick think about at home, MANY games consoles, Sky box, nowTV/Chromecast, media server, other laptops, PCs and smartphones, TV, surround sound, central heating control...

I'll have to give the video a watch later.

Thanks for the explanation Scott, i met a friend for coffee (MD of Waracle) who when speaking with Tony Thorne he said had we heard of a company called Concirrus... until yesterday i would have said no, but alas i was able to say Yes and mentioned IoT!!
