My dad's piloting a shiny new (F31?) 330d x-drive M-Sport touring with all the toys, and I am 100% impressed as an all-rounder. A4 Avant was the obvious choice topping the shopping list, and the Q5 got a good going over with the tape-measure in the showroom, but after test drives Audi was completely out of the game. The 330d engine and 8-speed flappy-paddle 'box are, as far as I can tell, flawless. Drives far better I'm told (I didn't have a go). Cabin is a matter of personal preference... I felt Audi interior had the quality edge by a tiny margin for reasons I couldn't really say, but the BMW is better looking (in custom spec at least... unfair comparison?). Anyway, very impressed with it. X-Drive probably knocks points off dynamically, but winter's coming! Mid to high 30s MPG average since run-in, and as the good old Scooby wagon replacement that's not bad at all. A diesel 4wd estate (yawn) that's worth of the

emoticon??? Yeah, I think I'd agree with that actually. I can't imagine a better do-everything car.
A contender for Best Car in the Real World

I'm seeing 40+mpg average with a fair amount of motorway driving. 8sp auto is super slick and did I mention it's fecking quick. Mine has the M Sport + pack so massive M Sport brakes, Harman/kardon loudspeaker system. 19" alloys and those clever beam forming xenons. I had a 2002 Audi A4 Avant which I nsold when I bought the Beemer but didn't want another. Can see me having this for quite a few years. Going to have my new winter tyres fitted soon so bring on the snow, a BMW that will make it off the drive !!

Sadly it's the "Golf" bit that's the problem.

My sincerest Campbell...
How about an A4 3.0TDI Quattro Avant S-line - Every time i get in ours, it blows me away, so rapid, remember taking Ed out in it, and I think he was pretty astounded. Rapid, versatile, big enough and okay 40mpg might be do-able (when the wife drives) but realistically a V6 diesel 240bhp, it's an awesomely good looking all rounder...
It's an Audi, so hopefully slightly more on-topic!!!!

A4 now eh? Sheesh. Well, always liked those too, but wrote the idea off years back when the double buggy wouldn't fit in the boot of an A4 Avant (yet did fit the boot of a Mk4 Golf 3 door!).
Bigger challenge now is that it would roughly duplicate the Octavia. Which is staying, for the foreseeable.
A great testimonial, though. So you never know...
cheers mate!

Love it! The Mk7 estate is such a great looking car compared to the Mk6. Its arrival also meant I got the last of the Mk6 estates for crackin' money, so I'm big Mk7 fan!
Sadly, it fails the exhaust configuration test. 4 pipes on a single-turbo inline-4? Not on my driveway, VW designers!
Probably a sign of old age, but I'm more interested in whether there will be a GTE estate. That would be a fairly speedy trade-in of the current TDi appliance

Whenever my S4 is in for a service I get the A5 3.0 Quattro as a loaner. I really don't like it. I don't know how much heavier the oil burning V6 is compared to the petrol v6 in my car but it feels much heavier. It's fairly rapid but it's no fun off the motorway although the loaners have had mahoosive wheels. Also the suspension is gash. It's supposed to be an exec spec motorway cruiser but it's far too stiff so crashes and bangs on anything but a smooth surface. I'd avoid.

I think Campbell is making a funny. There's no such thing as a Golf GTD Estate (or I'd have one), but there is such a thing as an Octavia VRS TDi estate, and Campbell's been drinking enough meths to believe that it's the same thing.
