Re: For the Love Of Cars S2
Katie had a MkI Scirocco in "Indiana" - was a fast car in its day compared to other sheds we had owned - certainly much faster than the rubbish TR7 it replaced

Re: For the Love Of Cars S2
Enjoyed tonights episode the Saab 96 was my first car it was a barn find but turned out to be a wee gem must have put 40,000 on it over four years , seeing it going over applecross brought back memories as did seeing him fishing for gears as first night i had it on the road i could not find 4th. Simply epic in the snow.

I enjoyed the Saab too , I nearly bought one as my 2nd car, was a toss up between a khaki 96 or a Mini 1000 and the Mini won, but I always hankered after one after the test drive.

Have to say, this show is proving to be a very good Sunday night 8 - 9 PM car entertainment, in place of anything else.

That was my good friend Jonny that sourced the SAAB, it had been sitting in my other friends parents drive in Loanhead for years, I bet they were glad to get rid of it.

Apparently it sold again on Saturday for £15k and they guy donated the profits to a cancer charity.

Re: For the Love Of Cars S2
Another great episode. I'm liking the blend of resto and vignettes on the model or manufacturer in question.
My Dad had two SAABs, albeit 99s. They took us to Devon two years on the trot and never missed a beat as I understand it.
A great shame that SAAB lost the plot (GM intervention?). I suppose Volvo continue to fly the flag for Swedish auto and a couple of their models might one day find their way onto our drive...although not in any rush, I must hasten to add!
Trannies next week then!

Re: For the Love Of Cars S2
Strikes me that the first series showed a lot more of the actual resto. Perhaps they decided that there's a few shows out there already doing stuff like that (although not to the standard) so they'd go for the social commentary angle instead.
Once I'd got past the fact that there was almost no detail on the work done on the actual cars, I started to enjoy it for what it is. Decent entertainment and watchable stuff for a Sunday night.

Read not that long ago that Vauxhall tried desperately to get Saab to accept the running gear they shared without tweaking it, but Saab insisted in making their own mods despite it being ready to fit without fettling, consequently GM lost money on every car sold and as Saab refused to compromise their engineering there was no option but to drop them.campbell wrote:.

...and you can't blame them as the hardware was from the first gen Vectra (i.e. shyte), this was the early-90s 900, not a car notorious for its on-road sophistication...j2 lot wrote:Read not that long ago that Vauxhall tried desperately to get Saab to accept the running gear they shared without tweaking it, but Saab insisted in making their own mods despite it being ready to fit without fettling, consequently GM lost money on every car sold and as Saab refused to compromise their engineering there was no option but to drop them.campbell wrote:.

They did have a nice fiat based 1.9 diesel unit though..rossybee wrote: ...and you can't blame them as the hardware was from the first gen Vectra (i.e. shyte), this was the early-90s 900, not a car notorious for its on-road sophistication...

Re: For the Love Of Cars S2
9-3 and 9-5, but possibly an older 9-5?
Kinda lost track on Saabs at the end though so not sure what their last car was.
Alfa (and presumably Fiat / Vauxhall) moved on from the 1.9 I have shortly after my car, probably 2009, to a more powerful / more efficient / cheaper tax 2.0 diesel, but they were out of budget for me at the time. Really, I should have bought a petrol estate rather than a diesel saloon but we live and learn
My dad had a 70s Saab 99 I think. I don't know much about it other than it was dark red, and he sold it shortly before I cam along in 82. I remember a photo showing the reg as WES 51L, and the DVLA tax system apperently does go back that far, so it seems it was last taxed in 84
