Once again today I agree with you wholeheartedly Tut.

Whilst not a founding SE member I have been around for 16 of the 17 years. The politics discussions kind of reflect the current divisive nature of the country/world. In the end of the day the purpose of SE is to discuss cr@p and b0ll0x about the cars, oh and serious technical stuff, track days and meets etc.

Naw tae insults and a bit of respect is all that's required.

Now, where's that footman? His arse needs a kick. Is that a bit kinky? BrianJ made some great posts and was great company, much missed. Loved him taking Mrs J's Jag on Knockhill still wearing his suit, epic.

Seeing Brian's name in a thread have me a shock until I checked the date, hasn't read that post before and delighted he referenced the "definition of a tuts" post.
Greyrigg sums it up best, and it was something that hadn't occurred to me. That the unpleasantness we are seeing in politics threads is just a reflection of society as a whole.
Well put.

Now to get Kelvin and Scuffers to the Christmas do...

Where have I been unpleasant or attacked scuffers personally in any of my comments? We were having a debate on a thread about Trump. A bit of passionate and robust back and forth is a positive thing as long as it doesn't get abusive or personal. A few of you have turned it into something else such as there's an issue between Simon and me which there isn't.

You've made it clear that you don't want that kind of debate on here. Fine, there's no point to the thread so close it. Don't allow political or controversial threads as they generally get debated like this.

I am keen to see robust debate, Kelvin, and I don't think you've been abusive.

Simon maybe ran close to the wire (we kinda know that's his style!) but there's a sense of humour in there too...and maybe that's the lesson for all of us.

I don't think thread closures are needed (can barely recall any in the history of the forum).

Everyone just needs to ask themselves "would I say this to this person / group of people face to face" before posting. There's a bit more to it but it's a handy rule of thumb.

Muppetry HAS chased away some valued people from SE. Would be sad if more were affected (Kelvin you used to joke about your finger hovering over the Banned button, I'd be gutted if you effectively banned yourself and were left only with SELOC for company, lol).

I just don't get folk moaning about people having discussion on a discussion board. I for one found the Trump thread interesting and pretty amusing for the most part. Very decent points given from both sides that provoked thought. Felt no need to post in the thread as I had nothing to add. There was no name calling just strong debate (and a bit of ganging up on scuffers as he'd annoyed others in other threads but his style kind of provokes that)

Threads that I don't like, I don't read, not that there are many.

People who decide to leave because of a discussion thread says more about them and where they are in their life than the thread itself. You won't change a thing by leaving. If they feel strongly enough then contribute and 'make that change' :)

The only name calling I've seen is in this thread and it's aggressive title. If any thread should be deleted it should be this one.

FWIW - none of the mods have made any comment on that thread. You're being a bit sensitive when getting defensive - "where have I attacked". To be clear, there's nothing in that thread that breaks any moderation guidelines as far as I'm concerned. If individual members don't like the tone, that's a shame, but the mods have take enough flak in previous years for trying to moderate tone - so we no longer do it. That's why the guidelines happened - for a clear direction on how we'd moderate.

So, I'd suggest if you want to debate, debate and if other members don't like it (which seems to be just Scotty right now), don't read the thread - because nothing in the guidelines seems to have been contravened in it, by my reading.

One or two members does not determine "us making it clear" - that seem fair? :thumbsup

Note I completely ignored Simon's so called baiting and stuck to the point. Like dogs and kids, sometimes ignoring the bad behaviour rather than drawing attention to it is a reasonable tactic.

So now I'm sensitive and defensive. Lol. There was me thinking I was just commenting on some of the comments being made on a thread called 'muppets on SE' aimed at the Trump thread which I had commented on.

opinions are like a**eholes, everyone has one.

I gave up on Pistonheads 6 years ago as the overall theme deviated form informative car discussions to polarising occasionally unfounded opinion. I half suspect its more about the way we debate these days, we used to go down the pub and have such debates, which i have no problem with. Now its the internet, shouting at keyboards and mobile devices, WTF. But overall a lot of good lotus content, a lot of very experienced heads, natural selection will see some go over time. Seeing folk leave through choice, thats a different matter. Cant please everybody all the time...

I haven't read the trump thread, we tend to go to sources of information we know these days, echo chambers. Rather than open debate so greater umbrage is taken when its amongst our peers. Was a good section o Radio 4 yesterday on this very subject...

Also, apologies for my Cycling chat

The Muppets were my fave show as a kid.

And one of the first DVD box sets we bought for the kids.

So maybe more age than location!!
