Is it ok to disconnect by battery?

Would i have to reset anything? In my old rover the fob had to be sync'ed with the immob each time.

i believe it is fine to disconnect the battery but remember to disable the alarm first or it goes nuts!

I disconnected mine when checking the battery power after some electrical issues - no problems with anything after reconnection.

Ed's point re alarm is a mute one (pardon the pun) as the alarm will have to be off to open the engine compartment

Err, not quite. The alarm can and will be in the passive immob state sometime after you switch off (< one minute). Once it is in that state, if you try and disconnect the battery it should go chicken oriental. But in this state the alarm will not sound if you open doors, boot, etc. Trust me. Older S1 (mid-98 and before) had a master override switch which was handy to disable the alarm, but after that there is no way ...

Now you come to mention it - I've managed to send mine haywire and I wonder if anyone knows how to reset it.

I've got an S2 (2002) with a Cobra alarm (don't ask me which type cause I don't have a clue!).

If I remember correctly, it went nuts when I disconnected the battery and I tried pressing every combination of buttons on the fob - as you do

.

Now, whenever I enable the alarm, it gives me about 10 seconds then goes off. I don't generally leave it anywhere where it would get nicked, so it isn't such a big deal. Plus, even if it did go off everyone would just ignore it.

Anyway, if anyone does know how to reset it, I would be very grateful for the advice.

Which reminds me about that special lotus club, anyone else been in the footwell when the alarm has fired ? Must have been a bout 3 days I had the ringing for.

I assume you have the Cobra 8185/8186 - prior to March 2002 the cars were fitted with a Meta system, and yours is 2002 with Cobra, so that would be the right one - newer cars may have yet another type I think ....

The car would have been supplied with a PIN card when new - typically it's tucked somewhere in the owner's manual folder.

I assume you think the battery in the fob is good - it should last two years - the LED on the fob should flash regularly while you hold down the large button. If it just comes on once or flashes a bit and stops, you should start by replacing the batteries ...

Finally to resynchronise the transmitter and alarm system:

Standing next to car, press and hold both fob buttons until the fob LED goes out (approx 10s), release both buttons and the fob LED will come back on. Press the large button for one second and the fob LED will blink. That's you. Repeat with other fob if required.

Next step is to reprogram PINs if that still doesn't work, but that should not be required, so I won't bother with that until you let us know how you get on with the above ...
