Formula 1 2018
Not long until this season starts again and I was wondering who you thought might win it this year?
Will Hamilton win again or can Vettel inspire a Ferrari win this time?
Steve.

Re: Formula 1 2018
I really wanted Alonso to have a chance, I still think he has the talent but it seems, he still doesn’t have the car.
Re: Formula 1 2018
F1 just not inspiring anymore, I was watching some of the British touring car racing last year and it just blows F1 to bit in terms of action, The support races were just epic too with particular note to the Ginetta Jr class, the Knockhill race was epic.

Re: Formula 1 2018
Obviously I'm hoping for a Ferrari win, but at the moment, I'd settle for anyone but Merc.
F1 is too stale, and the current situation where Merc have essentially bought many championships by ploughing a couple of billion into engine development and picking up a top 5 driver is dull. The rules are so stringent that once the season is on, it's all about who found the ambiguous rule in the off season, and can flaunt it until it is then banned.
Still, I'll continue to watch, for those moments of brilliance from someone in a lowly car like Verstappen, or Alonso.
BTCC certainly provides the action, but I never could get all that excited about a 1 make series, and that's essentially what it is nowadays. Sure, the cars are a different shape, but underneath, they are too similar.
The glory days of the 90s, where there were 10 or so manufacturers battling it out in the cars you saw on the street - that was the epic for me.

Also, there is an SE fantasy F1 league for funsies at https://f1manager.info/
Not sure if anyone is actually doing it this year, nor who manages it, but it does exist.
I've stuck a team in for this season.
9 or so days left to do so.

Re: Formula 1 2018
As a start point, I couldn't care less about F1.
And yet, every year, around this time, I get quite excited. Inexplicably.
Anyway I reserve judgement because I think the new owners of the sport are taking it somewhere good and that takes time. So will watch the first few.
Meantime we will be paying more attention to BTCC for now

Re: Formula 1 2018
I have actually quite enjoyed the coverage of Formula E a couple of weeks ago. Racing was quite close and although the car change is a ridiculous concept it provided the same uncertainty & opportunities as the tyre changes in F1. I can see FE usurping F1 unless F1 gets the shake up it needs.
Like Campbell despite the criticism I am looking forward to F1. I expect Hamilton/ Merc to win but Red Bull to be more of a challenge than they were last year & Ferrari to be up there too. I’m also hoping for McLaren to start getting better results too

Alonso finally has a decent car, not podium worthy, but at least able to join in the fight. Witty post race interview too.

Re: Formula 1 2018
Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but Melbourne is always a bit dull. Will reserve judgment for a few weeks yet.
Haas and Mclaren look well improved, other than that,I fear the status quo

Re: Formula 1 2018
Yep, Melbourne isn't the best over-taking track unfortunately. Personally I think it would be better to start the season at a European track, in the 'right' timezone to maximise viewing figures, on a track with greater over-taking margin as I think a more exciting / all over the place first race would bring in more viewers and hopefully motivate them to continue watching..
I don't get the Status-quo thing - last year Ferrari could have won, but their form drifted off, along with some crap decisions by Vettel. Lots of race series (or just various sports in general) have one or two teams who are generally at the front of the field. If you look back a number of years, it was McLaren, Williams etc. that were front runners. Its switched about now. Agreed if you want more 'action' you have to look at other race series where, effectively, the drivers, teams and cars aren't as good hence more mistakes are made (which is what gives us the exciting racing)

Re: Formula 1 2018
Without overtaking it's just a procession and despite my love of F1 some of the races ae just not worth losing a couple of hours of your life to watch, and this is what will kill off F1. At times, it's just too boring. You can get more excitement watching curling or crown green bowls sometimes...
They need to shift the emphasis to rewarding racing - close racing, with overtakes etc. I do also like the strategy element re the pit stop timings etc.

Re: Formula 1 2018
The status quo is that Mercedes bought a few championships by investing a LOT more than the others in engine development.
Last year Ferrari looked good but not quite there at the beginning, then lost it a bit with mid-season updates, and, as said, some poor decisions meant they were further behind, but the fact is that Mercedes still had the better car overall, and that was the 4th year in a row.
Sure, they aren't 1 second a lap quicker like they were in 2014, but last year they were still stronger overall.
What is the solution? Who knows, but I guess plenty of us keep watching waiting to find out, perhaps until it goes Sky only next year that is..

Sky only. Is that prediction or announced?
I'll be bailing if it happens.
