The Bealach na Ba is over-rated.
Not flat-out in a freshly forged Scooby, it isn't!

Forget John o Groats. Turn south through Lairg. Come over Struie Brae between Bonar Bridge and Alness.
Then nip out to Nairn, south to Grantown, over Lecht & Cock Bridge to Braemar, then Glenshee to Perth.
Enjoy!!
Let me know when Gav and I could join and give you a 2-11 lead out from Grantown to Blairgowrie.
G may even have his yellow one back...
Coming down glenshee you can duke a right towards Pitlochry, cutting out the dull bit between Blairgowrie and Perth

Even better flat out in a convoy of 4 Scoobies on Tour d'Ecosse in 2000........

Second this! Past Glenshee, cut off at Bridge of Cally. Moulin Moors road is well-sighted and great fun

Blairgowrie to Dunkeld, or Blairgowrie to Luncarty are other good options which bring you out a bit further down the A9.

Looks like I won't have the 2-11 back in time to meet up for photos.
Gav, you don't by any chance have a set of 2-11 wheels you'd part with, do you?

I did the whole NC last autumn. I strongly agree with skipping the whole NE to John O Grotty section as per previous posters .

Yeah, I questioned it when I first looked at the map. The A9 down from wick looks like it serves the whole east coast down to Inverness. Perhaps 5 oclock in the morning it would be a good run....
Plan so far is to stop in Tongue on night 2 and head south from there the next day. Soon as I get 5 I'll do those routes maps for you take a gander at.
Graeme, I do have some I'm not using here yes. I could possibly be persuaded to let a set go...

That'll be Rocky at The Lotus Centre. He'll want £500 a wheel for the 5 spoke forged ones!

Route I took and some photos of nice places on the way, although you might be pushed for stopping time on your schedule!

Recommend the Torridon Inn if that fits your route. As many others have said, John O’Groats is nothing to write home about. I went up that way just for completeness!
Baelach na Ba might be fun if you can get a clear run, but plenty or caravans/motorhomes ignore the “no big vehicles” warning!
Watch out for the aliens if passing Dounreay...
