Jokes aside, ep3 type R would come in significantly under budget even for a good one and pretty bombproof and they are a right hoot. A ‘teg might stretch the hatchback definition and practicality requirements a bit but worth a look if you can stomach the wing.
Integra DC5 been on bucket list for years.

What shape is Civic EP3? Always quite liked the 4 door import one. Integral successor, kind of.

That’s a bit more like it.

Always fancied the Sportback version too.

A3 a bit zzzzzzzzzzzz from a driver's POV,... unless S3 or RS3... but still not as fun as it could be.

There’s yer answer right there!

EP3 is the last of the good ones slightly boxy pre space ship triangle exhausts. Only 2door tho.

Polo 1.8GTi was a marked improvement over the 1.4 Gti. Evo gave it a four star rating, so can't be that bad? But fiesta is more fun!

That’s never gonna tripod or lift off oversteer you into a hedge backwards which is what a good hot hatch should do. So I agree with Dom bit dull and understeery

We had an ST, previous model to the current. Great wee car but to small inside and we tired of the ride very quickly. Great when you want to go for a blast but it is on the firm side when you are not. So chopped it for a Golf R and it would rank as one of the best all round cars I have every owned. Unfortunately you aren't going to find a Mk7 GTI for less than £12k and at that it'll have 80k miles. Save a little more, end of the year the MK8 is coming so 7's will drop in value.

How about 5x Clio 172/182? They are the defination of a hot hatch. And if you get five, then at any given point in time, you should have at least one in working condition :damnfunny

Had a phase 3 182 and chopped its for a 197, biggest mistake I ever made. 182 was a great little car, 197 was the complete opposite.

Golf Rs and S3s seem to be the house breakers car of choice around Edinburgh & the Lothians these days, I'd avoid unless it was going to be garaged every night.

French is out.

Perfect drivers car unnecessary. I have an orange one in the garage.

Golf vetoed by The Boss “coz we’ve had one of those already”. I will keep trying...

Me.

Ali - good insight, did you try a Polo then?

Ross - mk3 MINI is a munter but Mk2 not ruled out.

Raws - I struggle with anything French.
I'd driven one of the old 1.8T Polos and it was a pup, tried the newer 2.0 ones before Mrs C got her Cooper S and it was comfortable but just a bit meh.

Current MINI Cooper S only acceptable in 3 dr form and preferably with 'works' body and 'Porsche Lava Orange' paint...
The 5 door is indeed a complete munter!

Back on budget:
A bit off the wall, rare and marmite but the £10K vintage 208 GTi got a really good write up at the time.

Edited, no French cars /facepalm
Not driven one but could just about get an Audi S1 quattro...

306 Rallye.

Or a 130i (with M3 list control arms). Obviously.

Certainly not anything polo shaped.

Ah. It's for you. So what are the actual parameters?
