iRacing - Knockhill on way

Post by c8rkh » Sat Dec 05, 2020 10:36 am

For those of you who enjoy Simracing, Knockhill has been scanned and is in development for release in iRacing in 2021!

Shame there aren't any Lotus cars (apart from 60s/70's F1) on the service but still should be a hoot...

Hopefully the laser data being out there might mean stuff other than iRenting gets it as well... unless they are sending their own team, which would be an odd choice for such a US centric service.

My understanding is they scan themselves. They've got a good range of non US tracks and it's growing.

I believe the scanning is generally done by a third party contracted to a certain group. This basically means that for it to be included in other titles, the publisher/developer then needs to pay for both the rights to use the circuit (though that potentially could come along with rights to a series, e.g. BTCC) and also the actual scan data. Scanning is a costly process as they basically need exclusive use of the circuit for a few days / maybe as much as a week, plus all the equipment etc.

Of course, the other flip side is that not all that many titles use laser scanned tracks, and some that do, will never use KH (e.g. Assetto Corsa Competitzione being a GT licensed game and them not racing at KH).

My 'sim' racing is more or less restricted to GT Sport anyway (being that I only play on console / don't have a PC), so no real chance of me getting to it anyway :(

They have their own dedicated laser scanning team and proprietary kit I believe and they scan the tracks themselves, that may be just be in the US, but believe they do scan the track themselves.
