That seems a bit of a harsh reaction to a fairly reasonable sociological question ... is there something I am missing?

BTW, if you want to take something up with the moderators it is usually better to use PM ...

Are they automated, or just trying their luck? Seems a bit of an odd forum to try and hijack given the content and the relatively small audience?

Yep, turning on the security features available in php usually gets rid of most of them but the only way to 100% prevent it is to have admin manually approve all registrations.
