RX8 Experience ????

Post by CSK_423 » Fri Feb 09, 2007 10:00 pm

With the Audi on the way and the elise looking to move on soon the other half could do with a car, we have looked at everything one of which was the new mini at 16k

After watching the RX8 on top gear last sunday I decided to do some snooping about with 2nd hand prices etc. the other half wouldn't be doing any great deal of mileage so MPG isn't an issue and I'm aware of the oil required to run it.

Anyone had one or know someone that does ??

My friend has one for sale. Black, 231bhp, leather. Not sure on much more than that.

Its a great car, i've driven his and its superb fun, as shown quite well by the stig on sunday. Stability control thing is VERY good if your worried about the wife driving it.

RX8 Experience???

Post by cnbp173 » Sat Feb 10, 2007 12:12 am

Hi there,

I've got an RX-8 at the moment and have to say I'm loving it. The usual gripes are the fuel ecomony (which over here is horrible, although I believe the UK version is better - theway the engine management is tweaked to meet emissions) and the fact it burns oil. Mine burns very little oil and while I was told to check it every second time you fill up the car, I don't think I bother doing that and maybe check every 4-5. Mine the semi auto, with the flappy paddles, but I find it great for driving the back roads and then just whack it into auto for commuting in traffic.

The ride and handling are fantastic and the build quality is excellent. It's a really nice car for just touring about in and the back seats are actually pretty useful. I wouldn't want to be in there if I was an adult for longer than an hour, but it's ideal for kids and just "throw and go".

Amazed by the number of comments from septics at the filling station, as they haven't really been picked up by the mainstream here so people think they're much more expensive than they really are.

Anyway, hope that helps. feel free to PM with any other questions

Woman at my work had a one and she said it was a great car . Only problem was the terrible fuel consumption and hers used a lot of oil . She did just 30 miles a day and said it got too much to run.

Looked at getting one before the Liz and apart form the drawbacks of an emissions controlled rotary engine (The aero versions are v.efficient but to meet the emissions regs they had to massively overfuel them) the only probs I had were practical ones.

The seats don't fold IIRC there is a ski flap thing but that is all

The rear seats while roomy the hard shell on the back on the front seats combined with the cross braces running thru the rear seats make it a noisy and claustrophobic place.

Other than that it was fantastic to drive and the engine just loves to be rev'd!
You can drive it normally round town and it behaves like any car but out of town once you get over 4k revs it starts sounding like a turbine and you'll just bury the throttle :D

I'd still consider one if I needed a larger car.

Some promising comments there, ran it by the missus and she didn't seem very impressed she then replied with "what about a beetle" which I followed up with a slap !!!

My brother has an RX8. Despite a min 70 mile a day round trip at about 18mpg he wouldn't change it.

I am reliably informed that tey will average around 22-25 mpg if you are careful but if the revs get over 3.5k then the mpg drops to nearer 7....
