Mobile Phones

Post by Daveb » Tue Feb 27, 2007 7:11 pm

We've all heard about the new penalties for mobile phone use today.

People will still selfishly use their phone though, statistics show they only have a 1 in 200 chance of getting stopped by the police!

Do your part! Whenever you can, beep or flash the offending driver whenever it is safe to do so!!!! People know they are in the wrong when using the phone and being spotted will often be enough to make people think twice. The ignorant people who take no notice will hopefully be caught by the police sooner or later...

Post this up on all forums you are a member of, email it to all your friends, help the police fight this killer!

get a life :)

Don't you realise why this legislation has come in.....it's to make us all watch each other, report each other, hate each other.

Did you ever read 1984?

Sure you'll realise that though when someone has crashed into the back of you in your elise and its half the size it was with you trapped inside. ;)

i hate blanket laws that effect everyone. i have seen reps cruising down the middle lane of a motorway, on there phone, searching for papers, with no idea of whats going on around them. if your an over zealous, HSE obsessed, politician and see that, then of course you would want to ban mobile phones (not to mention the nice fixed penalty income)

BUT, i have personally answered my phone whilst driving, on the motorway, and stayed in my lane, and had a great awareness of what was going on infront and behind. so whats so bad about that?? If you flash me i'll probably just wave. that'll be more dangerous as i'll have no hands on the wheel.

I have experienced people who think they can use phones and drive at the same time, luckily I escaped with my life on more than one occasion (RED Lights and Junctions !!!!!!! ). My cousin wasn't so lucky.

I have yet to meet somebody who can use a phone and drive with great awareness of what is going on around them (excpet Neil of course  )

I have a hard enough time managing to drive with great awareness of what is going on around me let alone use a phone and carry out a conversation.

What's the big deal with having to use a phone while we are driving anyway. We managed for years without such things

There has to be legislation aginst mass usage of Mobile Phones in cars because it has been proven that it is a cause of accidents.

However this is because a high proportion of drivers are incapable of carrying out any other function than controlling their cars, and even then they fail miserably.

I actually never use a mobile in my Elise, simply because the noise level is too high, I am half deaf, so no point.

In a saloon this is not a problem, but just looking down to try and change radio stations, select and insert a CD, or use the cigarette lighter if I smoked, are far more likely to divert my attention. Never mind the mum that has three fighting kids in the back, and is turning around to try and control them.

However I am all in favour of the new legislation of a £60 fine and three points, because if you are so f***ing stupid to use a non hands free mobile in view of the Police, then you deserve all that you get.

Question: I have my nokia n73 in my hand dickign around with it, am I entering in a postcode in to the tomtom device or am I using a phone ?

Exactly.

I know myself I prefer to setup my tomtom on the phone then set off and put the phone out of eye sight and work of the audio. Maybe it is my eyesight but I know if I focus and read the text on it when it is mounted by the radio and then look back to the road the refocus my eyes do is simply not as fast as i would like. Also boredom would make my eyes wonder to the gps speed etc.

Guess it needs to be an addition to the law.

but there isn't is there?

we've had car phones for 20 years now, the current legislation is only to prevent you holding one, next it'll be no shaving in the car or rather no holding a razor, open or safety :)

Not a fan of people using phones in cars but I think it would be better swept into driving with undue care and attention, not automatic "use your phone get a fine and points". As Sanjoy says phones are only one of the many distractions currently available to the driver.

A more balanced and sensible approach by the legislation and police forces would engender much more respect and understanding. Not to mention happier drivers not paranoid about everything!

Sadly i think this will end up similar to the current speeding situation IE people hiding in hedges with a video camera and bingo a tax bill and 3 points land on your mat

I'm sure it was LJK Setright that said you only need one driving/traffic offence.

Careless driving.*

Any discretion on the road can be covered by this, from useing a phone, smoking, speeding etc, etc.

* I think it was careless driving, or else without due care etc.
