Something very similar happen on Iain's birthday run last year. The weather started of great and for once I was in with the group leaders and managing to hang on the back of Iain & Stu for most of the trip without any incidents - until the weather changed on the way to Rannoch station when both myself & Kenny had issues with running on 48's compared to the rest of the pack who were on treaded tyres.

I think the S1 advan's are hard to beat as a good track/road tyre in my limited experience of them on Mandy's car.

Might give the 888's a bash on the caterham though once I've found a pair of wheels.

For the seven-sized wheels you probably have some other choices too - I would ask on the various sevens lists to get a good answer (or at least a lot of answers!).

I agree the Advan Neovas are hard to beat on the S1 as an all round tyre.

It's a shame there isn't an identical 195/225 combination for the S2.

Cheers,
Robin

For a 7 i guess you have some spare wheels if not get some

For everyday use go for AO21r which is a fine tyre not super sticky but can do everything, do tend to melt a bit when used hard on a dry track.

For dry use i would say 48s are pretty impressive but no idea what they are like in the wet as i haven't tryed them yet.

the R888s are getting quite good reviews in the caterham circles once you dig through the BS

21's fitted as of Friday night - got a spare half set so once I get round to finding another pair I'll be looking at either 39's 48's or 888's

I haven't taken my a048's off this winter (i have a set with t1r's on them). The only time I've had an issue has been standing water (no great suprise) or wet white lines (a few wee sideways moments on Dukes Pass)

Once they have heat in them though, they have remarkable grip in the wet, if you are sensible and keep in mind the laws of physics.

Is there any problem fitting R888s to the rear wheels if there are different tyres on the front?

I have AO39s on the exige but the rear ones are beyond limit whilst the front ones are still good for many miles. I had R888s on the Megablade and liked them and I am likely to do about 3k miles/year inc a couple of track days. Advice from them that know these things appreciated.

Currently have R888's on the rear and 48's on the front, only notice a slight difference in sidewall stiffness when going hard on the track.

So do you replace the front 175/55/16's with a 195/50/16 ?

My front tyres are almost new, but the backs could do with being replaced.
I take it, it will handle really well with 225/45/17 Toyo R888 on the back & the 175/55/16 RE040's on the front ?

Robin,

Are the R888s really up with the 048s in the dry? I just remember overtaking you one dry day at KH when you weren't on 048s - that shouldn't happen on similar tyres :)

Were you on something different (tyre-wise, I mean!) that day?

Hmm - what car was I in?

In recent times:

The S1 shed has had advan neovas on it.

The tango S2 exige had A048s for about 3 months from new and then T1R until it became Gareth's.

The S2 135R had A048s at KH the one time it's been there - switched to R888's that same day, but didn't go back on track with them as by the time the tyres were fitted the session had ended (in fact you and I were chatting at the wheels around van at the time - I think you were maybe getting new tyres later too?).

Can you remember which car I was driving when you overtook? That will narrow the tyres down a bit - but none of them would have been R888 anyway.

The A048R is going to be a better tyre than the R888 in hot dry conditions for sure, especially if you have the medium front and medium/hard rear compound - the softer A048R is probably more-or-less identical to the R888.

If you drive the car on the road in Scotland, I think the R888 is the better bet. If you're really just tracking it, go for the A048R.

Cheers,
Robin

You might need bigger front wheels. I bought Exige wheels to allow me to run A048's, if its standard S2 wheels you have currently.

theres a guy who does LoT days who is very similar in performance to me, identical cars, engine, suspension. only thing thats different is tyres. I am maybe 0.5 second faster than him in the dry round cadwell on 48's, but he is more like 1.5 seconds faster in the wet on 888's.

thats about as good a comparison for the tyres as i can find, as theres really nothing in the drivers.

Robin,

Thanks for that - it was Tango Exige on T1Rs that was slow.
