03 will replace 0845 and 0870 numbers for businesses but will be charged at standard geographic rates (i.e. like calling an 01 or 02), so it's a good thing if you're a follower of "say no to 0870"!

one of my pet hates is calling an 0870 no. and then having to hold for ten minutes. drives me up the fecking wall......

Changing the number will not remove IVR systems - its all about revenue generation and improving customer service

Exactly . . . it's aimed at stopping people moaning about the amount of money they're losing when on hold to an 0870. With an 03, you'll still be on hold as much (that's a staffing issue!) but just not paying as much for it!

We like nothing more than reassuring that customer that what we have just told them is utterly true by "checking with a colleague"

By which I mean put you on hold, go get a glass of water, have a chat and check my e-mail, then tell you I've asked a senior.

The other good one is:

"I wanna talk to your manager!"

"OK sir, I'll just pass you over"

and then pass phone to random passer by/guy in the next cubical for some customer reassurance.

My job isn't all bad!

Its one bloody big con, and makes my blood boil, as most people do not seem to realise that they are being suckered.

I pay £9/month for unlimited geograhical UK calls, and International ones, yet have to pay 10p/min to call an 0870 number, which most businesses are now using. Even Insurance companies etc that you are giving your money to have changed over from 0800 to 0870.

I use saynoto0870.com every time, and usually am able to find an alternate 01 or 02 number, or another way is to use the calling from abroad number if there is one.

I complained to some company recently and asked them to phone me back. When they eventually did I asked them for a freephone number if I needed to contact them again. They said there was only the 0870 number. however when I was putting the phone down I noticed that the number he phoned me on was an 0800 number

So I phoned him back for free and told him I had posted the number on saynoto0870's web site. He wasn't too pleased

0844 is the same as 0845 except the company themselves get a percentage of the call directly. They dont receive any for 0845 - thats what 0870 is for.
