I believe a careful-owner, shopping-trips-only VHPD engine is on the market courtesy of Scotty...you know it makes sense!

Actually, better off getting a Skoda transplant. At least those ones are meant to run a turbo ;-)

Not sure that a Skoda one has actually been done. The Audi 1.8T which is probably identical has been but I've never heard of anyone even suggest using one with a Skoda badge! Obviously all badge snobs

Diesel in an Elise...one day, one day.

Skoda - it's the badge thing, just has to be done man!

(yep, underlying engine is the bulletproof and infinitely tuneable VAG 1.8T unit...wonder if a 2.0 T FSI could fit...??!)

The 2.2 diesel vauxhall uses the same block as the petrol counterpart ( or verysimilar so im told) and Alan Dickie is/was seriously looking in to it for one of his vx's. Trouble is he had a shot of tuts honda and now wants one of them. The guy on seloc is putting the golf tdi unit into an elise.

Now that IS a heavy engine. I'll wait until an all-alloy one arrives, thanks!

Also I think Lisa would notice if I swapped my Elise engine for her Golf's ;-) Even if it is now Sabre Spec and going like a dream.

Wonder what fuel consumption you'd get???

If they can average 50mpg in a golf, and the Elise weighs half as much.......

You got me thinking.

Combined fig for Golf 150 TDI is about 43mpg. Which is accurate, that's what we get with blend of town and motorway. Think the 1.8T Golf figure is nearer 35mpg.

The TDI proves 23% more efficient with all other things equal.

So applying that to the Elise, whose combined mpg is something like 40, you are looking at nearly 50mpg. COMBINED. And my m-way figure is usually 45, so taking that up by 23% we are at 55mpg :-)

Obviously the TDI lump is much heavier - did I read that a K is about 65kg? Surely the TDI has to be twice that if not more. And that's assuming it can actually fit

I think VW do a smaller TDI, a 1.4 poss 3 cyl version, fitted to Audi A2, Polos and the Fabia. It's an 80 bhp unit but probably pushed out more torque than the Elise 1.8 K, and it should be tunable for maybe another 50%. So you could have a 120bhp small diesel on board, I'd have thought :-)

But just think of the vibration at idle !!!

Toyota also do a D4-D engine in 1.4 turbo size I think. Toyota...now where have we heard that name before! And I think the MINI Cooper Diesel uses a 1.6 Toyota unit?

the mini diesel is a PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) unit.

one of our company motors is a Fabia with the 3 cylinder diesel. The vibration and shaking of what is an intrinsically out of balance engine is bad enough in that - in an Elise it'd be torture!

The 320 or 330d BM engines would be insane if you could make them fit.

I still think Bike power is the way forward for an Elise....maybe with a turbo....
