I think the Merc would be a good runner - braking down is not the problem, it is trying to stop the MOT man from deeming it a binner!!!

Greg, where are the details for it, all i can see is are the pictures.

P.S Ed, i will continue my focus search for you! Then i will laugh my ass of when i see you in it, or i might buy you a big bore exhaust and some tints for it!!!! :drive

Agree with the Focus comments. My first company car in 2001 was a new 1.6 Focus. I did 70k miles in 3 years. It only ever once got close to letting me down when it starting running slightly rough. Quickly identified by the local Ford garage as requiring a new set of plugs. Changed those and it was right as rain.
Mileage was about 38mpg and that was driving fairly hard including regular jaunts up farm roads.
I would try and go for the 1.8 zetec or if you can stretch it get a TDCI one, but be careful as I am sure there are a few different diesels to chose from.
It was a great handling car and lots of fun.

I now have a mondeo and that is also a great car, just coming up for 60k miles and not a single problem in 2.5 years of ownership. There are at least an other two in the company car park and the same story. One of my workmates has a Golf and he has been plagued with niggling little issues over the same period.

What you want is something that is:

Fun to drive?

Cheap to run?

Handles well?

Easy & cheap to fix?

Is classless?

Very 8)

Stick a 1380cc motor in it, + a roll cage & away you go :drive

Ed, what about a Puma? Mine cost 2K, it's quick and fun enough for a runabout and doesn't cost that much to insure. Comfortable and reasonably practical too, if you can look past the slightly dodgy image

Cheers ive spotted a few of those already. I'm confused that some of them say Zetec and LX and Zetec and Ghia. Is there any quick way of working out which ones are actually Zetecs? :scratch cheers

Zetecs have 15" alloys with the 5 x twin spoke design; almost all Lxs have 14" steel wheels with flush plastic wheel trims. Avoid Ghias - they have truly nasty plastic fake wood on the dash. Confusingly they all have a 'Zetec' engine. I have had both a 1.8 Zetec hatch, and currently an LX Estate. Both pretty excellent, but the Zetec is the best choice just for far better seats, although not many older Zetecs have air con.
